Paul,

The problem with passing them is when they're oncoming! The country is
usually so flat and the roads so straight that overtaking is just a
matter of patience and nerves as you get to their 'bow wave'.

These road trains travel at speed too. Sometimes up to 70-80mph. (I
think they're supposed to be speed limited to 60mph with 70 being the
limit for cars). So a combined oncoming speed of 140-150mph can blow you
about quite a bit.

When towing the Auster back 600miles from South Western NSW we travelled
along the Hay plains & there were many two trailer road trains with a
few 3 trailer road trains. We had them overtake us while pulling the
trailer with the Auster and we were doing 60mph. For oncoming road
trains I'd move over and drop the speed back a bit. The highway is only
two lanes, one in each direction so there's often not much room to move.
Thankfully the trailer tracked really well and the load was stable.

I've attached a pic taken when I went back a month or so after getting
the airplane with Dad to pick up engine parts etc. This was taken on the
Hay plains between Balranald & Hay in South Western NSW.

Here's a link to the pics I took when we picked up the airplane;

For us in the States, there is that hit of the 1980's that instantly comes to mind:

Convoy" is a 1975 novelty song performed by C. W. McCall (pseudonym of Bill Fries) that became a number-one song on both the country and pop charts in the U.S. Written by McCall and Chip Davis, the song spent six weeks at number one on the country charts. Chip Davis who later did Mannheim Steamroller recordings, which we hear all the time at Christmas.

Road trains are the lifeblood of outback Australia. Trying to reverse one would be an interesting exercise.

And if your flying West across the Nullarbor in an Aeronca, with a
strong head wind they'll pass you.
