About a week ago I have searched for the static RPMs of the Continental A75. Someone suggedted looking at the STC.
I have the STC SA2875WE, which calls for minimum static RPMs of 2225 and maximum of 2350. I was working away from home so it took me a few days to get to my records.

Harvey, who took the 0 SMOH engine for a test flight yestrday.

Richard,
I had the Owens STC for the Chief that Duane has now. It also was serial number specific as I suppose all of these are.
Duane might still have a copy even though he has replaced the A75 with a C85. I have an STC from Champion Aircraft for this Champ.

Harvey, who is debating on what to do with the A75 I removed.

That makes me question page 3, note a. I wonder if 1220 pounds is a typo. Just curious!

Harvey, where direct crosswinds are in upper teens with gusts in mid and upper 20s.

I looked up the Type Certificate Data Sheet on the FAA web site (see
attached) and it shows 1220.

I still have the STC that came with the engine that was in the Chief when I bought it from Harvey. The next time I’m at the airport I’ll grab it, scan it and send it.  It’s supposed to rain here all week.  I don’t plan on being out there too much this week. Let’s hope for a sunny weekend.

Here are a couple of pictures I took Saturday. We finally took the blown up A75 apart. The number 4 is the one I’m showing here.

Duane-

I have both John T Owens Service Letters now. No need to make a copy.

How did your case let go? Was in on the ground? Looks like a thru-bolt migh have been the starting point?

Richard in OH who has spoken with Tom Owens about his father's STC for Chiefs and Champs

Richard,

Glad you got the STCs.

The #4 cylinder is the one that blew off.  It's one that doesn't use a through bolt.  Just 6 studs in the case.  I'm not sure what the cause was, but it was an eye opening experience for a student pilot.

Richard,

I was 700' off the ground when it became very apparent that there was an issue with my engine.

Duane.  Was it just a sudden cylinder leaving the engine?  Then what? I’ve seen valves sucked and rods thrown but not a cylinder departing the engine totally.  roger

Roger,

About 3/4 of the case snapped.  The loud noise I heard was the base of the cylinder slapping against what was left of the case.   When I stopped and turned the engine off it sat there looking almost normal.

Here’s what I saw.
