I’m planning on using a portable intercom in my Champ. Any suggestions for mounting? I’m undecided at present if I’ll use a hand held, or install a panel mount under the instrument panel. The radio will be powered by the same portable battery I use for starting.

Paul,
If you are going to use a panel mount radio, why not use a panel mount intercom? They seem to fit easily in a small space and are generally better than the portables.
Flying in the LA basin I got tired of the small knobs on my 21/4" panel mount and installed a King comm radio under the panel. It works great. My transponder mounts on the diagonal tube by my left leg.

Paul, I bought a Microair radio because it has a built in intercom. I installed it under my right knee and ran the headset jacks under the floorboards to mounts on the floor on the left side. Also put ptt switches in new wood stick caps. I'll see about getting some pics.

I use an older ICOM with an external antenna. Two AA battery packs get me to Oshkosh and back just fine. I used velcro to mount a portable intercom and a metal bracket for the spring clip on the back of the radio. All the wiring is held up out of the way.

I don't use a battery other than the one in my handheld, and a 9 volt in the intercom. It's a Sigtronics, and it lives in an aluminum bracket I made, mounted on the left side forward of the throttle. I put PTT buttons in the sticks, plug them into the intercom, plug the headsets in, and plug in the input from my 5 watt handheld, which is in a bracket up on the frame on the left side of the windshield. There is an antenna mounted on the ground plane of the left wing root fairing.

I used an Excom 760 which is better I believe than the Microair. same
size and has an intercom. It is in my Chief, as the old panel had been
butchered I had to make a new one and put it in that on the left.

If you haven't used any of the industrial Velcro it is pretty amazing stuff.

Mine has a radio stack on the floor between my feet. The radio currently installed is old, so there is a separate intercom mounted with zip ties up by the wing root. I do plan on upgrading. The only problem I've had with the floor stack is that it seems to vent all the heat to the back seater. Just goes to show you should always carry paper charts with you - I need to stuff one under the seat to divert some heat up to me!

Velcro holds my little 9V intercom. Occasionally, the battery needs changing so I can just peel it loose. The headsets plug and unplug easily without pulling it loose. I made a small aluminum plate that I attached just right of the throttle panel ( passenger side) under the instrument panel. It's worked for a few years without any problems.

Along that line, a handheld has many more features that ANY panel radio, is smaller, lighter, uses less power AND you can pull it out and use it as a " handheld" oh and costs less.
One invaluable feature is that you can scan the entire band and catch every AWOS along your route and catch the WX channels if you want.
That's just my opinion.

Nothing against a panel mount (had one of those little Microairs...was that it....in my Ercoupe...super small and worked great). However, my Icom handheld (mounted in position on the panel in my Chief) gives me excellent sound quality and great range.  But...it's all about being connected to an external antenna.   roger

Intercom

Thanks for some useful ideas. I think mounting it with Velcro above the left sliding windows will work best for me. I could also mount the handheld up there also.

That's where ours is.
Makes it easy for the back sweater to plug in.
Would send pic but can't from here.

The back sweater is sweating because the heat has been diverted to the back?
