I want better climb performance, it appears the O-200 or an O-235
would be the best way to go.

Has anybody here upgraded their 7AC with an O-200?
What STC did you use?
Any comments or suggestions about this upgrade?

Best bang for your buck is the O-200 crank in your C-85. All the horsepower
of the O-200 but since it is still a C-85 the expensive repetitive spar AD
is not required.

Rob,
It's too soon for me to say as to performance, but I bought the Don's Dream machine STC.  I just picked up the last of the parts yesterday.  Begin assembling today.

Stick with the C85 or C90 to avoid the spar AD.  Both can be modified to produce as many ponies as the O200.  C90 is becoming more rare as time passes and C85 cranks are made of unobtainium, but the O200 crank can be substituted by STC.  Early C90 cam can actually produce more usable HP than the later O200.

Hi Carl,

I gave some thought to that, but they are getting harder to find, and I am
told the cost of rebuilding them is higher than for the O-200. If I found a
good deal on a C85 or C90 I could change my mind.

Hi Tom,

While I think the C85/O-200 STCs sound interesting if I have to rebuild an
engine, I was hoping to find a running mid time engine that I don't have to
rebuild, and so save a little money.

C85-12 cases are pretty easy to obtain, and prices are generally pretty reasonable.  Barnstormers usually has a good selection.  The O200 STC is pretty simple, and easily accomplished (he says, tho' not yet finished!!) ;-)
Here's where I am on mine.
I bought a C85-12, for my A and P school project, from a gentleman in AZ on the understanding that the O200 stc was already installed.  It is in the logbook.
On disassembly, I found 3 O200 rods and one C85 rod, and someone had whittled on the O200 rods with a grinder, the pistons were C85 pistons, and the cam was a C90 cam, and the crank is cracked at the slinger ring.  Lots of new parts!
Tom (who already understood that not all bargains are bargains!)

Hi Tom,

I wish I were in a position to work on an AME ticket (the Canadian equivalent of the A&P/IA) but short of a large lottery win it's not going to happen any time soon.

Buying an engine really seems like a crap shoot. I'm afraid I'll end up with a "bargain" like yours, or worse. A running C85-12 with reasonable hours sounds like my best bet. Then I can look at doing the O-200 parts STC on it when it needs a rebuild.

Agree on the crap shoot part!!  I did buy a overhauled C85-12 for the L3.  I haven't fired it up yet tho.  It was run on a test stand, and the guy doing the rebuild is widely respected around here.  We'll see in a month or so, unless it gets too cold to continue putting it together.

While even the most honest knowledgeable people can sell you an engine with problems they were not aware of, I know people who I would buy a motor from on their word that it was good. Unfortunately none of them have a C85 or C90 for sale :-(
