Hi all my name is Rusty. A buddy and I have n83635 down here in Central Arkansas. Glad to find you all!
We are wanting to put some bigger tires on our 7AC champ. We have Goodyear wheels and brakes and our IA says that per the type certificate that we can legally only go to 700x6. He said furthermore that with the recurring AD to check those wheels for cracking that a 337 to do it might be hard to get and maybe not a good idea at all.
Wondered what you all thought. Anybody been running bigger tires on those old wheels? Good? Bad? Any previous basis for approval?
Thanks!
-Rusty

Hi Rusty, and welcome.

There are experts on Goodyear wheels, and then there is me. The only Champs I know of with 8:50 rubber have Cleveland wheels. Even that takes a 337. I have them on mine. I'm unaware of an AD on Goodyears for cracking, but there is one for Clevelands. A set of original Cleveland wheels is hard to come by. Many have converted to hydraulic brakes and later Cleveland wheels. I still have the original cable brakes, but the later Cleveland wheels.

Wheels are always coming up, you may find some good reading in the archives.

Keep the pressure down, probably around 14-15 psi maybe even lower. AND
check frequently for cracks in the rim about flange height. The AD is real
not a CYA.

I agree with Cy. I run between 13 and 15 PSI using a tractor tire gauge.
Where are you in central AR? I buzz around Pine Bluff and Star City.

Ok guys....help me out here.   After going through the logs on my 11ac with the GOODYEAR mechnical disks...my IA and I came to the conclusion that the wheels have been inspected and signed off on AD 48-08-02 for cracking for the last 49 + years.....only to find that this AD only applies to Clevland wheels.

I have done searches and can find NO ad for the goodyears for cracking.   Am I  missing something?  I did bead blast, inspect and chromate during the last annual....but

So....can anyone give an AD # for inspection for cracks on GOODYEAR wheels on the Aeroncas?

Don't think they have one.  But I'll check the logs.

"8-08-02 AERONCA, CHAMPION AND SILVAIRE: Applies to all Aeronca 11 Series, Champion (Aeronca) 7 Series, and Silvaire (Luscombe) 8 Series Aircraft Equipped with Cleveland Model 6:00 DMB Wheels, Assembly No. C-38500.
Compliance required after initial 500 hours of operation and each 100 hours of operation thereafter.
Remove the tires and inspect the wheel flanges for fatigue cracks. The wheel should be replaced if cracks are found"
