.Any one know of a source for the brake clips for the Goodyear brakes.
I've just used my last spare. I have the "U" shaped clips although I
could use the ones with the square hole in them but don't know how to
fit them or get them out again if you have to. I have 13 of these brand new!
The manual says 95-3348. ACS list them as 9520435 at $79.85!!! Don't
know if these are square hole or "U" shaped.
Any more info on this would be appreciated.

Thanks Mark, you mean I've got $1025.05 worth of square holers I don't
want ! Any takers?
I try Don.

Ian,

I use the square holers but can't afford $80.00 a piece. Especially after the engine overhaul. I'm in some pretty deep do-do right now over that. Charles Finch makes beautiful metal things.

Travis, you and I both, just paid out $16850 for a Don's engine
outright. How do you get the square holes in and out? I can use the ones
I've got then as my wheels will take either. I imagine you have to slide
a knife blade in there to get them out?
Yes I've got a spinner on order from Charles. Never thought to ask him
about springs.

I use one of those long sharp pick tools. You have to hold your tongue just right. A screwdriver wedge between the floating disk and the hub helps. Not too close to where you are working, not too far away. Inserting them is surprisingly easy and .025 safety wire is very effective in keeping them there. We have discovered that if you arch the clips just a bit more they stay a lot better.

OK Travis, now leading question. As I have many of the square hole
clips, I wonder which is best? You mention safety wire to hold them in.
OK I thought they couldn't possible come out once in. You say safety
wire? Fastened how? (Sorry so many questions)
With the U shaped ones I have a band around the wheels to stop the
buttons coming out and this has proved good for the last two years.
Decisions, decisions.

Dear Ian
See if your wheel has 3/8" square "tits" projections located half way between each of the U clips.   If so , you can use the "square" ones.  It will be easier to understand if you take the wheel off but they are pushed on and pop over the projection. To get them off will be harder, perhaps a feeler gage would lift them.

Somebody with these clips-- how do YOU do it?   I also believe that Tom Roush of this list has an article written on doing all this?

Strongly advise not taxiing with missing clips   BTDT

There was talk on this list the last time brake clips were wanted and someone sounded like they would just make up a bunch.   Who were you:?

Square ones are silicone glued which stops the rattle and holds them just fine.
A dab behind the area where the clip lifts off the rim to meet the disk,
a little more around the disk edge and clip interface, but not on the disk face itself.
Cut with Xacto knife to remove wheel for maintenance, clean off and reapply for installation.

A small RC model sized screwdriver helps to lift the lower edge out of the disk.

You work on the side opposite the brake puck.  Don't need to take the wheel
off the plane.

Be gentle with them and make absolutely sure they engage the little nib on the
wheel.  Otherwise they can look like they are in, but aren't.

Keep four of them in a baby food jar in the plane.   That will keep you from
being stranded somewhere if they let go.

Keep begging someone to press out a thousand or so of them at a good price.
The $4.35 I paid for one back in 1990 was still highway robbery.   Let alone
the price now!

Any more FAQ's.....?

Ian, the 9520435 clips are the original square hole ones that slip over the wheel boss. the ones that you are using now are 9523482 that use the dot fastener. ACS has them but the last time I checked with them they wanted over $120.00 ea. Rainbow Aviation (rainbow Ron) has them on ebay for about $30.00 ea. The alternate # is 9523937 and I see ACS now wants $27.75 for them now. the 937 clip is is identical to the 482 clip, just the # was used on the early cessna 310 with goodyear wheels.   Preffered Airparts has all the clips , and the #9523937 clip was about $17.00 ea.

Tony,

I sent Charles Finch some clip examples and he was investigating their manufacture. He is quite a busy fellow right now hand forming engine nacelles for the HondaJet. He is very interested but busy.

Is everybody here familiar with Advisory Circular No. 23-27? while taking advantage of its provisions may not be necessary in this case as of now but as our pets get older there could be some value in knowing about it. If everybody already does, I apologize.

Bob, is it on the FAA website? Don't know it and they don't always
follow the FAA here (in Australia)

Tony and all who have replied to the clips question, yes my wheels have
the "tits" for the square hole, but are also modified to fit the U
shaped ones which I'm using at present. Yes I always carried spares and
just used the last one. As it would not seem completely impossible to
fit the square holers, I think may be I'll keep them handy and may fit
them next annual.
Thanks for all the input, I had kept an old e mail from Colie Pitts and
have sent an e mail to Preferred Airparts. Will see what they say.

Ian Whose head is ringing with all the options :-)

Ian, just checked preferred airparts inventory, and they only have 815 new "U" clips and 26 used SV ones. bet you can get the serviceble ones at a pretty good deal . let me know how it works out. that was 704 of the 95-23482 and111 of the alternate number 95-23937, both like your using.

I found an old butter knife to be a good tool for gently prying up the rear of the clip over the boss for removal. The first clip was always most difficult, and the rest were progressively easier. There was an optimum position to rotate the wheel for clip removal. I think it was directly across from the caliper. And the axle nut needed to be off so the disk could move out to the edge of the wheel casting as the wheel moved out on the axle at the same time as the clip is lifted over the boss.. jrh

.

Yes it is on, and can be printed out from, the FAA website. The title of
it is "Parts and Materials Substitution for Vintage Aircraft." It is an
amazing step in the right direction by the FAA.

those square hole clips will work just fine as long as the bosses or tit area has not been worn excessively from previous use. my printer/ scanner is down right now, but when I get it back up ,will scan and send you the square hole clip removal and installation page from the goodyear operation and service manual.
