Has anyone installed an aviation products tailwheel on their Aeronca?

This is the tailwheel that they install on the "new" Champ that ACA produces.  Apparently you can install this on Champs with logbook entry as ACA added this tailwheel to the TCDS, but they did not add this tailwheel to the Chief's TCDS and will need a field approval.

While at Oshkosh I talked with the engineer at ACA and he said that they had some surplus inventory of these tailwheels and would help me get it approved for my chief as he works with a specific individual in the FAA for the planes they manf.  This is maybe a bit more convenient because I live in Wisconsin where ACA is and would be working with the same Milwaukee FSDO office that I will need to get the field approval.

I was just wondering if anyone else has already gone through this process on a chief.

By the way.  The Fella from ACA said that they may be willing to sell several of these surplus tailwheels at a discount to get them out of inventory?  List price (prior to any discount) is $410.  This is a double arm 6" solid tailwheel assembly.  Maybe others would be interested as well.

I'm considering this tailwheel to replace my 8" Maule to help stop the shimmy (on pav't) and also to save some weight.  I would love a Scott 2000 if I could find one in good shape that didn't cost my first born plus my left arm!

you can buy it direct from API for about $ 255.00. just ordered one for my chief, 6 inch wheel, double yoke, 1.5 inch flat spring.

Is this the solid balloon tire you have or is it flat?

How do you like this tailwheel?  What did you replace with this unit.

I have been looking at going factory direct too.  The only issue is that I still need to get a field approval.  And I thought that working with the company that owns the type certificate along with the FSDO might be a good way to go and may make is simpler.  I think the discount may be 25% Which would bring it to $320.  Still is $70 more.

I would actually like to put on the matco 6" pneumatic wheel and tire on the aviation products assembly.

I don't see the ACA tailwheel on the 7AC TCDS.   What am I missing?  Here is the tailwheel section from the TCDS, straight from the FAA website.

7GCAA, 7GCB, 7GCBA, 7GCBC, 7KC, 7KCAB, 7ACA, except as noted)
( a ) 6 x 200 steerable Scott Aviation Model 3000 7 l b . (+186)
( b ) Maule Models SFS-12, SS-12 or SAFS-12 6 l b . (+186)

Interesting.... you may have to call ACA as that is what the factory engineer told me.  And maybe it is only for the new champ which I think is 7EC.  Although what you list below includes that model. ?????

All I know is that if the factory is installing them on the Champ they must be legal at least for the 7EC..

In my opinion I think this is somewhat nonsense as a field approval "should" be a virtual no brainer for any champ/chief as they are essentially identical to the Champ.

I may just call the FSDO and find out how hard it will be to get the approval on both the Aviation products tailwheel and then inquire about the 6" pneumatic Matco tailwheel.

How about calling Aviation Products? Believe that they have a STC that covers it.

Great idea.  But I have been unable to find a website for the company direct or a phone number.

Does someone have Aviation products phone number?
