I would appreciate any comments or opinions you might be able to share on the Garmin 196 and 296. Having saved my  Loonies for several years. I have enough money to buy a GPS. It will be used primarily in my non-electric Champ, and occasionally when travelling in a borrowed C172.

I have used an old Garmin II occasionally and liked it, so I am looking at the 196 and 296. anything else is beyond my budget. I have never used a color GPS, but I think it would significantly improve readability, is this the case? Around home I don't need the terrain feature, but I hardly need a map let alone GPS there. It seems to me that the terrain feature would be most useful when flying into unknown territory. Do you think the 296 is worth the significant increased price? (approx $1200 for the 296 vs $700 for the 196 in Canada).

Rob,

I love a color display but it does run through batteries faster.

If you are going to be using it with a external power pack or plugged into the plane, then this
is a moot point but just wanted to point this out.

This is one of the reasons why I stick to my old B&W Garmin 195. Works good and batteries
last a long time.

JA Air sells garmins but they also have the Lowrance2000C for $799 and the 600C for $499. I use the 2000C in my 7ac. It has altitude, terrain, moving map, and center line extensions of the runway. It comes with all accessories for that price. It has a large screen and is more user friendly than the garmin. A battery pack is needed for longer flights.

I have a 296 with mounts in three different planes. I have not found the
battery to be an issue. I've flown over eight hours straight and the battery
was only about half run down. I typically will use it several times a week
and only charge it about once every week or two. I like flying with the
moving map with the ground speed in one corner, the vertical speed in
another corner, the altitude in the third corner and the distance to the
next waypoint in the fourth corner. Since my chief does not have vertical
speed indication and the altimeter is one rev per 10000 feet, I find that I
tend to use the 296 indication for my primary altitude indication. With a
safety pilot I have actually flown instrument approaches using only the gps
panel page and with a bit of practice it goes pretty easy. With all the cell
phone towers popping up, the terrain avoidance is nice to spot the towers. I
like the ability to be able to download the flight data and tracks from the
gps to my PC where I can review the details of my trips. I have not tried a
196 but have nothing but good comments for the 296. I have flown with a 396
and the weather is great except for the price. I have a 430w in my IFR plane
and I actually prefer flying the 296 to the 430 except for approach, since
the 296 will only enter the last two waypoints for an approach. When I go on
car trips I use the 296 in my vehicle and it works very well. I understand
you can interface your fish finder to a 296 but I have never seen that done.

I have an overhauled eight day from a 195? Bonanza. It is quite nice,
running fine and keeping time to less than a minute a day variation. How
much is quite pricey to have them overhauled? As I said I can do an overhaul
for sixty dollars plus return shipping. The clock is a Swiss Wakmann and is
well made. If you are interested please email me and we will discuss price.
As a fellow listee in good standing you may be assured that the price will
be right. Photo attached. Looking at the photo, I'll retouch the winding
knob (crown) before shipping, if you want the clock.

Actually,

I'm looking for an 8 day clockie, for myself.. They're quite pricey to
repair; I had 2 repaired at Keystone whatever they call themselves, for my
IA last summer, as a thank you to him for all the great work he's done with
Bill's cub, but it was worth it too.

Anyone have an eight day clock, the wind up kind, not the electric? I
would be willing to buy any that are lying around doing nothing. Scott from
Nostalgiaire sent me four clocks for repair. One has a broken winding stem
and is missing the crown (winding knob). I would like to buy any old panel
mounted clocks for parts or repair. If I can build up a little stock I could
turn around a wind up eight day clock in one day! It looks like I'll be
able to fix three of them , but need parts for the fourth. I have two or
three WWII pilot's wrist watches which are under restoration they Might go
good with an AERONCA L bird. I just finished two beautiful old pocket
watches for Bob Hartman in Englewood Florida, they came out beautiful and
both are running like the fine watches that they are. They were shipped out
today USPS PRIORITY MAIL. Anyone on the list qualifies for a special price
on repairs and overhauls, as in my humble opinion, you are all, very, very,
special people. For e
xample we will overhaul a genuine Rolex for $150.00 including shipping, the
Rolex factory charges $450.00 for the same service. Omega's including
chronographs are $125.00 and most panel clocks are sixty dollars, plus
return shipping of about five dollars. Old pocket watches overhauled for the
same $60.00 plus return shipping. To anyone not known to me, pocket watches
are $100.00 plus parts.

gone into global warming mode from one day to the next.

The 2000c has 4 aa batteries that last about 2 hrs with the back light  left on which is necessary on bright days.  Without the back light the batteries last 6-8 hours.
There are several reviews online as well as comparison charts.
I just looked at avionicswest.com and see this unit for $628.99. Retail is $999.
That is a great price! There number is 731-926-2820.
I use a 12vdc battery pack that weighs about a lb and the 2000c runs all day. They can be bought for less than 50 bucks or can be made with a rechargeable battery and a cigarette lighter adapter.

Thanks to everybody who responded. I had already wrestled with the issue of Lowrance vs Garmin vs Avmap and pretty well decided upon the Garmin. Having looked at what is out there I think that all of the candidates are probably and it's mostly a matter of choosing the one that best fits my needs. After considering feedback from a number of sources I will likely buy the Garmin 296, (it's never certain until I have handed over the cash :-)
