11AC Chief owners.  Works on 7 series Champs if you have a Chief Nose bowl.

Just want to put out a little information to anyone that may be interested in McDowell starters on their Aeroncas or any other airplane with small Continental engines. Don Jones and I are currently making all parts needed for kits for A 65, C 75,85, & 90 HP engines, and flange shaft and tapered shaft engines.

These items include starter mounts, pulleys and pulley brackets, fairleads, handles, boots , shims , spacers and special nuts and bolts. We currently have 6-8 starters, 6-8 tapered and flange shaft ratchet wheels. Our goal is to have enough parts for spares and to make up kits for all combinations.

Later this summer will make the bolt on brackets and handles for the Champ. If the interest is sufficient, we will start making a limited number of new starters and ratchet wheels. We will start up an E-BAY store shortly with everything listed separately and as a kit, with pictures and info needed.

Anyone wanting any information on what you need or any questions, can contact me by E-mail. Would like any feedback or a poll on what you may want, to help us determine quantities to be made in the future. I have helped out 10 to 12 Chiefs in the last 2 years get everything they needed an installed on their Chiefs including the only McDowell in the UK. Currently have 5 Champs on the want list.

Let me know if interested and what you may need. Plan on having everything for all combinations . Remember Ray Johnson has the spinners and backing plates for tapered and flange shafts and metal and wooden props.

That's great news! Don't forget you've helped at least one Champ as well.

Did you see the PDF I posted yesterday about the McDowell? I was thinking Joe or Todd would grab it for the web pages, but it isn't exactly Aeronca, it shows one on a Cub. Another market perhaps?

Colie that's wonderful news, I thought the starters were long gone like the dodo bird! I have a 11AC Chief that I am putting back together (project) and I have always wondered about the pull starters. I am down to bare frame right now, so might be a good time to look into them? I am curious how much they cost and if I could even afford it. Sure would be nice, I've watched YouTube videos with Chiefs with the pull starters on them and I get jealous that mine doesn't have one :(

Thank you for posting this to the group!
All the best,
Keith in Lompoc

Wow Colie and Don.  What a worthwhile and appreciated project I'm sure.   As Dave says...any idea yet as to what will be the  needed price on a complete unit to make this worth your time and effort?    roger

The future Mrs and I moved hangars and just finished painting the walls this weekend, we'll be setting up our shelves and organizing the tools next. Our main goal is to get the stuff off the floor before the rainy season hits (we don't have gutters and the puddles can get pretty bad). We're really interested in the safety starter, as hand propping the 11AC chief makes us a little nervous. We also hope to some day get floats back on the plane (as it was originally a float plane, notice the larger dorsal fin on the frame in the attached picture). I can see myself easily falling into water trying to hand prop. We still rent an apartment, and we're restoring this Chief when we can afford it. But since it's all torn apart, it might be a great time to look at these safety starters and see if we could afford one possibly. Colie, this is a great opportunity for those of us who know we can never find one out in the wild anymore. Please let the group know what you're charging for these fantastic starters.

All the best,
Keith & Kabrina
