Hi John,
Do the e-mails from Google groups go into Google e-mail or can you keep them coming in through Outlook? The only concern I have about Google e-mail is that you can't configure it to automatically place certain e-mails in specific files. As an example, in Outlook, I have it configured to have all e-mails that have "f-AA" listed on them to go into an specific file so that it does not clog up my inbox. I can then go through it when I have time without confusing them with work e-mails. In addition, in Outlook, I can preview them without opening them. That is lacking in Google e-mail.

Well, I don't really like yahoo groups very much, but am more impressed with google groups....
I think it's possible we can have our cake and eat it too.

John,
I very nuch like the way the list works now.  My ISP's filter stops some messages from coming through but I am able to see and allow them for the future.  I was on a couple of yahoo list and found them much more difficult to work with.  I am not on these any more.  However when it is all said and done - if it is easier on you to change to yahoo, well I'll go along.  I like this list.  I read almost every email #### or not and feel I have a lot of friends all over the world through this list.  It is a nice feeling.

Well, we have had a large amount of spam coming from our clients and being passed through to the internet, so there's some reason for providers like yahoo, aol, hotmail, etc. being a big upset with Westmont.edu .

I've considered making a google group - in fact I've already made one - to replace aer...@westmont.edu .  Of course, any email sent to aer...@westmont.edu would be redirected to this google group account, for continuity.

What do you all think about this?  Is it now time to move to google groups?

Gaaah! & my own email ended in the spam filter (See the Bulk TAG in the
subject!)

I'll also add that there seems to be higher than normal quantities of
spam at the moment as well as a higher rate of computers on the 'net
trying to use my email server to relay what is probably spam.

You can subscribe and then tell it to send emails to your regular email account - you don't have to have a google account. So if you can filter them now with Outlook, you could be on a google groups list and filter them the same way.

John,
I for one, like the fAA setup as it worked well for me. I'm using
Mozilla Firefox with Norton and I'm rarely having any trouble with spam
filtering. It took a little training, but now it runs very smoothly. I,
for one, have tried Yahoo and don't really like it much.

John,

What we have now is working very well for me. If the current set-up can be
improved for you some how, take up less of your time and energy, then by
all means go for it. Otherwise, I'm happy with what we have. Some of the
other more "sophisticated" forums I have access to are very hard to use and
seem impersonal as well.

Joe, you can configure Google mail to be downloaded via Outlook client.  You have to set the option in the google account web page, then set your Outlook to connect to google and send and recieve.

This is true - you can set up Outlook to go to google mail, but with the google group, even that is unnecessary: you just sign up with your regular old email, and it sends the email to you just the same as it does now from Westmont.

That said, I don't want to be seen as pushing people to google groups.  The situation is that some ISPs have become more strict about designating a site as a spam source, and in the past month, several have blocked Westmont email from their users altogether.  I am investigating googlegroups as a way around this problem:  you can sign up for the google group, and since email to aer...@westmont.edu is being copied to the google group, it can come to your email, despite what your ISP may think of Westmont's mail server.

Once I started investigating it, though, I found that the google groups may function very much like our existing list does, except that Westmont doesn't have to back up the data, send it out our internet pipe, and so forth.   It's a little harder for me to manage the google group compared with the Westmont group, but it may be worth the effort in the long haul.

I am most interested in a dialog about how best to provide this service to my dear friends on the list, and not at all interested in leading by fiat (even if I have been designated the Grand Poobah of the list).  I am especially interested in feedback from those who have signed up to the google group:  What has your experience been like?  What do you like and dislike about the google group, having used it for at least a few days?
