If we get 40 psi on startup and it drops to 20-20 at 1200 rpm in 10 minutes, are we in any kind of trouble, or is that acceptable.

Should we adjust the pressure relief valve upward?

Not acceptable to me. I get 45 at cruise with oil temp at 185.

Go to the Continental manual and see what it says.

Depending on the age of the engine, OAT and oil used it can be pretty low and still within
spec, so best to check with the factory data.

The C-145-2 on the Sedan (really the same engine you have with two more cylinders on it)
goes to 37 and stays there the entire flight no matter what happens.

The A65 manual says 10# at idle and 30-40# at cruise. The C series says 10# and 30-60#. I've shimed my C90 for 39# max.

If you always get at least 10# while running and at least 30# during cruise, you are within limits. If you don't get 30#, try shims. If that doesn't work, or you don't have 10# min, you have a serious problem.

That is not good for that 65 hp, you already have good pressure at startup changing relief # will up the startup # then it mostly will drop back too 20 # after warmup.  I  would look at oil pump gear and housing then look at crank / bearing fit.

What are the hrs on the Engine.

30 / 40 cruise

A little less than 300 SMOH, but that was in mid 90s.
we flushed a lot of junk out of it.

BTW, it's almost hard to justify opening up the case when you can buy one for 3-4k.

What is it at cruise? Poor machining or wear in the accessory case can lower the low rpm pressures relative to cruise, as the clearances allow more to squish by. I'm not sure, but I tend to think the pressure valve does not figure into the low rpm pressure...

My A65, for the last 900 hours (since I've owned it), is about 45 at start up. However, in summer when oil temps finally get to about 180, the pressure runs 26 lbs at cruise and drops to the 10 to 15 range at idle.  Our local old time A&e says on the small Conts. that is just fine.  Do I wish it ran 30 -40 at cruise in summer, sure, but not worried about it. It stays consistent so I'm happy. The pressure relief valve won't raise low pressure, just dumps high pressure.  Roger

Also wonder what weight oil they are using and how high are the temps?

My Don's Dream runs 48 for the last 300 hours, only goes down a bit in extremes of temp.

I would have many more questions. Maybe this engine is new to you and you don't have answers? How long has this been a problem? Is this new? Has it been getting worse? Just what kind of "junk" did you flush out of it? How much was metal and was there aluminum or steel or both? From where did you flush it, the oil tank or the screen or both? Is the screen staying clean or is there always a little metal? Since it was overhauled did this engine have a dry start where the oil pressure did not come up immediately? Was it revved up to try to get the oil pressure to come up? Oh, I hope that didn't happen. Does the oil pump lose prime if it sets for a couple of weeks, or three months, or six months? What is the total engine time? What about the less than 300 overhaul? Who did it? Were the main and accessory cases overhauled or checked by Divco or someone like that.or did it just get rings, bearings, and gaskets and that was called a major overhaul? Does it start, at a dead idle or wi
th the t
hrottle cracked open to 1000 RPM? It should start at a dead idle or it needs immediate oil pressure to prevent excessive wear or damage. What brand and grade of oil are you using? Did changing brands or grade improve the oil pressure? Have you checked the accuracy of the gauge? Has the relief valve been disassembled, cleaned, and inspected for wear or crud under the seat or sticking? You don't fly an A65 at 1200 RPM. What is the oil pressure at 2150 RPM in cruise? Are you not flying because of the low oil pressure? My long distance instincts are telling me you got a $problem$ and you already know it but you don't want to believe it. The question is, is it $ or $$$$$? jrh

Pete,
I regularly get 30 psi on the ground( meaning low throttle) and 40 psi in cruise.  That's my A 65 in the Chief.  Not quite as good as Jerries' but in the same ballpark.

I would argue that is better than Jerry. Running more pressure than you need will accelerate the wear of the oil pump.
