Mr. Murray! How are you Sir? Is it still true that that Chiefs are faster than Champs no matter how much MMO they wipe them down with?

That is a true statement if you are talking about the pre-war Chief. 65hp of thrust and everyone will be keeping your rudder at their 12 o'clock.

The field where we held the convention before 2025 has been overtaken with a new building housing Butler Tech Aviation Facility. It's a fantastic concept they are trying providing all high school courses for Sophomores,Juniors, and Seniors.

Everything is in one location and the Sophomore is introduced to piloting and mechanics. Then they choose piloting or mechanics their Junior year. Passing the General knowledge test at the end of the year. Their Senior year is focused on Airframe and they pass that test by the end of the term. They can graduate and be employable or return the next year and pass the powerplant test.

Conventions in the future will hopefully be welcomed in the facility for our seminars and possibly the Friday dinner and Saturday night Banquet

Hope you are there in 2027.

Sounds like a neat program. So it’s just you and me left here ???

I’m still lurking here too.

I took the radio battery out of Dad’s Chief on the weekend to charge it. I’m afraid the battery has had it. It won’t resurrect even with a fancy de-sulfating charger, and the cells are all swollen and puffy. It serves me right for neglecting the battery.

I also appear to have one of the gel cell batteries from the Auster that is bad too - it’ll take a charge but isn’t holding it. That could be age though as I wrote March 25 2016 on that one!

2016 on a battery has more than served its useful life. Extremely cold and extremely hot temperatures on a low charge is the death of many a battery.

I saw a gen-x battery the other day and the weight is absolutely unbelievable. I wonder if the lithium will behave differently in extreme cold and hot conditions.

I replaced the lead/acid sealed gel cell with a Lithium for the radio removable center console for my chief, and have been pleased with the result.

Yup. Anything to stir up controversy, Rafael. I was going to cast a replica of the chief logo, but it was before 3-d printing and it ended up being too hard for my limited skills baking plexiglas in the kitchen oven. Making a passable replica with 3D printing shouldn't be too hard nowadays.

Any charging issues? Did the battery come with its own charger?
What make/model?

The experimental guys love the EarthX LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries. They’re unbelievably light for the energy that is packed into them. I also believe the newest Cirrus models also have EarthX batteries now.  I’m still using an Odyssey PC-680 clone AGM lead acid battery in the RV-6 though and think I’ll stick with it. (It helps with the somewhat aft CG some RV-6’s are known for too.)

LiFePO4 also a lot more finicky than  lead acid batteries. They require a built-in battery management systems to keep the individual cells balance and to control charge and discharge etc. I believe LiFePo4 chemistry is the safest of the different lithium battery chemistries, but given the chemical energy in them, I’m not sure I’m ready stick one in any of my planes yet.

I accidentally set fire to one of the 26650 lithium ion cells in the handheld vacuum cleaner, while being cheap by trying to replace the individual cells, and not spend $100’s for a replacement battery pack. Even though it was dead flat and wouldn’t power the vacuum it still had enough chemical energy to go off like a roman candle. I’m lucky all I set fire to was some scrap paper on the bench. I had a burnt patch of lawn where I flung the flaming cell. The powder fire extinguisher didn’t touch the flames.

I’ll be going back to tried & true lead acid gel cells to power the radios in the Auster and Chief.

The Gruuuuuman is happy even if doesn’t fly every day like it used to. Gabriel is good, the company retired the CRJ and now he is in the Embraer and almost have time to be captain in the new airplane. He is happy and they treat him well so I’m happy

No charge issues. I bought it in October 2022. I charge it about once a month. I've never discharged it completely.  I bought a separate charger.
Total was about $80 for battery and charger.
