Lew Leibee was before my time. He apparently started selling parts out of
Hawthorne CA before moving to Fresno (see 1947 trade a plane ads below). I
have purchased many an airplane part from the business he left behind,
(Fresno Airmotive/Fresno Airparts). It is my understanding that two son in
laws ran the business until 1974 when one of them (Robert Weber) left to
start his own mail order parts business from his house just east of the
Carberry Cropdusters airstrip. My parents lived on the west side of
Carberrys and my Dad, Brother and I were the last mechanics to work out of
the hangar before it was torn down. The land was cleared and crops were
planted leaving no sign that the airport was ever there. Both of the son
in laws are gone now and I have been told a third generation family member
runs the business today. When I learned to fly at the Selma airport in
1975 my instructor pointed out Lew Leibees house about a mile south west
of the airport. The story is that some of the rebar in the swimming pool
was surplus 50 cal. machine gun barrels. Tons of military surplus went
cheep in those days. I spent many a day picking through local surplus
yards looking for treasure in the 70s and 80s. There is an Aeronca ad and
a couple of Screwball Squadron cartoons in the pictures also.
