Roger,

Thanks, some great memories. I recall traveling from NY to SFO on a super connie which was quite and aircraft.

Regards,
Sam N6404C 1947 USAF L16a
Santa Maria, California where we had 1/2” of rain a few days back.

Roger thanks for the memories--in Jon's collection are a number of
aircraft I have flown--the one that really sticks is the DC-3
(N28342). I was the co-pilot on that airplane on October 29, 1960.
It was the last DC-3 flight on Delta Airlines. Harold Rowley was the
Captain--Birdie Bomar (Delta's 1st stewardess) was working the flight
along with Gail Gail Airoldi (brand new stewardess, just out of school
who was the granddaughter of Tip Schier, the Captain on Ship 42's
maiden flight). In the final flight picture that is in the History of
Delta book, Harold was handing Delta VP of Operations, Charles Dolson
the log book. We departed Knoxville (TYS) that day and flew to AVL,
GRL, SPA, CAE, AGS, ATL. I have the picture framed. I had been with
the airline 5 years then.
Later I provided Jon with some L-1011 pictures and info that were
never used in the L-1011 book that he did not get published. Doug

MDW is still my bailiwick , I have been in there with the DC-3,Convair 340, 727 and currently on a fairly regular basis with the wee jet. It was a bit of a challenge in the 727, especially the infamous ILS 31C circle to 22L on a stereotypically dark, and windy night( it was always windy) onto a 6000 foot runway which was considered short field ops for the 727-200 stretch. Hand flying that jet at circling minimums , banking , and bumping along at the MDA , was both a joy and a test at the same time. I loved the 727. ORD, I've graced only a few times once in the Douglas, several times in the Classic 747 , and a few times in the wee jet . Great airports but JFK is still my field of dreams.

That's interesting stuff Doug.  Hard to imagine today TYS to ATL having five stops in between.   When I was first working at ZLA, located up in the Mojave north of L.A., the Mojave airport, which was all but totally abandoned at the time, was covered with B337s and a bunch of others, including Connies I think.  And the Lancaster airport, where I kept my TriPacer and then Champ, was loaded with DC6s and maybe 7s, and Connies.  They sat there until one day they were all chopped up and hauled away.  That seems like not that long ago but  was actually almost 50 years.   Two of my hanger neighbors are retired airline and their sons are both flying for FedEx now.  Kids are nice guys, but they are just not getting to have all the fun and adventures that you and their dads' did.   roger
