Still struggling with installing the new spinner, backplate and spacer on my 47 Chief after the engine overhaul. It’s been a months-long frustrating (and expensive) ordeal.  The new spinner I bought from Rick on this listerve is larger than the original, and the spacer I had custom made isn’t thick enough.  Bill Pancake in his infinite wisdom recommends pulling the prop off, temporarily installing a group of washers to determine the thickness needed, and having a new, thicker spacer custom made.

But the concern is that if the prop moves too far out on the tapered shaft (because the backplate and spinner are too large) the prop might not catch enough of the key slot in the shaft to allow the prop to be installed properly.

The original cowl and bowl on the front of my plane was built in the factory with extra space for the McDowell hand-pull starter, which is gone. So, the smaller nose cone and backplate may be required to make it work. I’ll attach photos, hoping the wise heads in this group can confirm the theory and/or suggest a better solution.

What a nightmare 😲

It sounds as if you will be money ahead if you buy a McDowell starter gear and install it to address the spacing.

Richard in OH who has dug himself into more than one money hole.

Looks like the spinner is a two piece nose piece.  The original Chief is a single piece spinner.   The diameter doesn't look that far off.  This is my Chief with a spacer, 8F engine.

Did the spacer not match the print?
If you need a custom one let me know, I’ll do it for a discount.

I would be concerned that the prop hub taper doesn’t seat fully because of a thicker spacer.

The factory mounting arrangement for the prop and McDowell starter included this spacer stack-up between the prop and the taper shaft adapter: Spinner back plate: 0.050” thick; spacer 2-1017: 0.250” thick; McDowell ratchet: 0.125” thick. To match that thickness without the ratchet, the spacer would need to be 0.375” thick.

There was a lot of discussion about the spacer on the Aeronca Bulletin Board several years back. Predominant opinion was the spacer should be 0.500” thick. You are correct that a ½” spacer is problematic, but not for the reasons stated.

The adapter is keyed to the crankshaft; the relationship between those two parts is not affected by spacer thickness. What IS affected is the engagement between the prop pilot bore and the centering boss on the adapter. The second drawing in the attachment shows the situation I encountered with a Sensenich metal prop that had a ¼” chamfer on the pilot bore. Using a ½” spacer with the ratchet provided NO engagement between the prop bore and the adapter boss – i.e. nothing to keep the prop centered. Without the ratchet, the engagement would be only 1/8” at best, assuming the measurements I gave are correct.

Your best solution may be a 3/8” thick spacer. If there is still insufficient spinner/nose bowl clearance, consider installing #21530 washer(s) between the engine mount and the rubber bushings to move the engine forward. As always, get a second opinion from a trusted mechanic.
