Seem to remember several people reporting that a NAPA gas cap would work on the Main
or Aux fuel tank on a Chief.

Does anyone have a part number or description for this? I do not need one but have a friend
who wants to see one.

Thx,

Joe A

You start messing with fuel caps, you better know whether they are vented or not. Some are, some aren't, and it is very important.

The ball check valve is found out west here in the Slant fuel caps.  Try to avoid those if you can get just
a plain vented regular fuel cap.   During the 1980's the Dickey AAC newsletters had one that they recommended but it's out of production and you can't get it on the west coast anyway.

Are those Caps and gasket the ones that would be applicable for the two 13 gallon wing tanks on the 7EC ?

Before you go messing with tank caps, know if they must be vented, or not. It is important. things can get bent if you get it wrong.

Yes - Thanks Richard
It had + pressure tubes on the caps facing fwd when I got the a/c, but with the tanks full, the pressure would blow a gallon or so out the fuel system vent on the left wing bottom. I replaced them with a couple of plain caps that would fit, and all is well.  I would like to install a couple of vented caps "just in case" though. I don't know whether it is supposed to have vented caps or not. Would that info be in the type certificate?

It is my understanding that the wing tank caps should be unvented if there is an overflow in a high pressure area, ie under the wing. If two wing tanks verify that it is cross venting to the other tank. I would think that the parts manual for your plane, or the stc for the tanks should specify the caps but may not give a generic description, vented or unvented. On my 7CCM the cap for the wing tank appears to be a standard automotive radiator cap with a check valve that seals under pressure or opens into the tank if there is a vacuum. I too would like to know what the original cap looked like.

Since my EC was built by Champiom A/C in 1958, the wing tanks are original equipment. I'll check the manual again, but I don't remember anything in it about the caps.

It would have to be a service manual or parts book. Or...American Champion would have them off the shelf. They are still supporting these old planes including my '49 7CCM.

Hi Mike,

The information that you are looking for can be found in the Champion Aircraft Operating and Service Manual 7EC & 7FC in the fuel system-26 gallon section of the manual and Champion Aircraft Service Letter #39 dated February 25, 1969.
The fuel caps should be non-vented Part # 1-8768-2.  Service Letter #39 called for a change of the venting system by installing Kit #197.  This kit consist of all the fittings and vent lines.  Also the vent line had to be rerouted from the bottom of the wing to the top of the wing between the wing and the fuselage on the wing gap fairing.  The vent line sticks up about 2" and is pointed forward.  Using vented caps on this fuel system does not work very well because they are located in a negative low pressure area on top of the wing and will suck fuel out of the tanks and sometimes restrict fuel flow to the engine.  I plan to do an article on this and in it will be in a future issues of the Aeronca magazines.

Bill,

As long as we are on the subject, how about the Chief series?

As well do you know which fuel caps are correct for the Sedan series?

Considering that the factory parts are not available any longer for the Chief
and Sedan aircraft, would really help to know what an owner needs to look
for on these airplanes as well.

Thanks,

Joe A
