Having installed 2 x 13 gal wing tanks in my 7BCM, I'd like to remove the nose tank. My A&P wants to know what authorizes the removal. I have not found anything that specifically says the nose tank can be removed. Champion Kit #192 for the 2 x 13 gal installation doesn't say anything about it.

Is there a specific document/statement that authorizes removal of the nose tank?

Bob.

I've always understood that the wing tanks were to accommodate the additional hourly fuel flow from higher HP engines and the
main tank still functions as the header/main tank.   I'd contact Ron in Moses Lake and ask him.  He would know.

Thanks Mark.

Unfortunately, the Champion Kit #192 does not specify a header tank at all. It does include front and rear manifold blocks. The front manifold combines fuel lines from both wing tanks and feeds to the gascolator.

Robert-

Refer to Service Letter 56, section .22.2 for removal of the 13 gallon nose tank

Oops that is .21.2 in SL-56

Thanks Richard, I learned something.   With the 5.5 tanks the nose tank remains and with
the 13 gallon wing tanks it's removed.

Interesting math.  You have 24 gallons - with two 5.5 wing tanks and 13 nose.
You have 26 with two 13 gallon tanks and no nose.  Different CG too.

Apparently a different wrap around too!  Makes one wish for the days when
parts were all around and there were planes you could pull parts off of,  without
guilt.

Good to know about the Champions in 1963,
Mark

Mark,

You have the added bonus of getting fuel out of the cabin area too.

You could always do what Dad did in his Chief; 15Gal nose, 8 Gal aux + two 13 Gal wing tanks. Helps with those transcontinental flights Dad did.

Don, I was thinking of the patriarch today. How is he? Rarely does he comment anymore.

Thanks Richard. I did see SL-56, .22.2. I pointed it out to my A&P but he's reluctant to base such a modification on a service letter for conversion of a 7AC to 7EC when my Champ will remain a 7BCM. The Type Cert A-759 (Item 116) is silent on the nose tank removal upon installation of 2 x 13 gal wing tanks.

Also, John Propst had Bill Pancake install 2 x 13 gal tanks in his 7AC. The 337 said "Removed original fuel system and piping." I assume Bill knows what's correct.

Since Kit #192 includes all of the parts necessary for the 2 x 13 gal installation and there are no connections to the nose tank, it seems logical to me that the nose tank should be removed.

I'm still digging.

Replied to Richard via direct email.

Dad is well. But for the THIRD time this year the river flooded, and he is cut-off from my brother and I. The Sydney region copped  a huge amount of rainfall in the last week. The airfield saw 19" over the last week. The ground already totally saturated and with full dams & reservoirs meant massive flooding again.

Bob,

I would suggest your A+P/IA reference SL-56 as guidance for removing the tank and include the verbage from John Probst's 337. For a recent 337 for a battery I was encouraged by my PMI to include the phrase "and i/a/w common accepted practice"

Yes, I had been thinking of you when I saw reports in the news of flooding in Australia.  Keep safe!

Hi Steve.

We will be removing the 13 gallon nose tank from our 7BCM in the next couple of months. If the 7BCM tank can be used in your 7AC then ours can be available. I'm reasonably sure they're the same. We also have the 5.5 gallon tank from the left wing. I'll have to check to see if we have all of the wing plumbing.
