I am looking for info on getting a starter and battery in my Chief. The starter part is easy but the battery is not. I was just wondering if anyone has put a battery in a Chief before? The baggage area in mine is just a canvas bag. Did you change the baggage area to wood or aluminum or did you mount the battery on the firewall? Do you have a copy of your 337? Anyone got any suggestions on where to place the battery in a Chief???

Thanks,
Lance

At one time my Chief had an electrical system with a wind driven generator. No electric starter. The 6v battery was mounted on a piece of plywood behind the seat. The plywood was attached with adell clamps to a cross tube and a diagonal tube on the right side. The baggage sling was removed and the area placarded "no baggage". The auxiliary fuel tank was also removed when the battery was installed. No pics as this is all long gone. There is a 337 on my FAA records disc but no drawing. I haven't figured out how to take only one page from from adobe reader and attach it to an e-mail. When my computer geek comes home from work, I'll ask his assistance. Joe H.

Joe H,

Open up the FAA CD, and find the page you want. Look at the top or bottom
and it will tell you which page you are looking at.

Then go to the print menu. Select "print page ##" and hit ok. This will print
the page you are talking about, and if you then have a scanner you can scan
it and email it if needed.

Lance,
I sent you drawings 7-608, 3-625 and 3-594 to your own E-mail.  It's 3.2MB, so it may take a bit to download.  The main drawing shows the overall installation of radio/electrical equipment in the 11AC.  The other 2 are drawings showing the actual mounting boards for 2 battery locations.  One is for a smaller dry cell.  Might be good to mount external power for a portable radio?  The other is the main one that goes under the bagage comparment on the right.  You can make this and install it without having to destroy or redo any fabric.  The clamps are standard clamps from any hardware store for securing electrical conduit (drawing 1-231 - first used on the K)

Mounting the battery according to this drawing is covered under the Type Certificate for the 11AC.  I'm not an IA (so please one of the IAs weigh in on this).  I believe that you can install the battery, in accordance with Drawing 7-608, with only a logbook entry required.  Of course the Weight and Balance needs to be updated.

Best of Luck,

My friend has a Chief with a battery and wind generator , no starter.
The battery is behind the passenger seat.

Just want to thank everyone for the help. especially Joe H. for the 337 example and Craig for the drawings...

I plan on using those drawings and making the wooden platform as shown.  Not sure on what side, maybe the passenger side to help balance out my weight when I am solo... Need to make sure my IA is going to accept this, I will talk to him this week.

thanks again,

Lance
