The latest issue of AOPA has an article about the Buddy Holly crash.
Wow...holy smoke....can you believe it's been five zero...fifty years...half
a century on this coming Feb 3 that it happened? A 21 year old non
instrument rated pilot, a '47 Model 35 Bonanza, 2 am, Feb winter in the
frozen north country, a no horizon night with a snow storm in progress, wind
gusting to 30 kts, and an attempted VFR flight into the darkness and across
the wasteland, destination N. Dakota. Four people and a load of heavy
baggage on board. Made it a couple of miles from the airport.

And this was a charter flight. The airplane was equiped with and old-type artificial horizon. If you've ever tried to use one it's indication is backwards from our familiar attitude indicators. Have met the owner of the Bonanza several times but have never asked him to talk about the crash. Part 135 has come a long way.

I got my initial instrument rating in our 1960 Apache with one of those AI's, and a horizontal DG. No problem, the only thing that is "backwards" to the next generation AI's, is the angle of bank indicator at the top. Granted, going from a newer one back to those, took some getting used to. Yuh just "fly the aircraft" relative to the stationary horizon.
I trained many guys basic instruments in 60's - 90's Cessna's, and then they finished their Multi-Instrument on the old Apache. I must have a pic it around here some place - maybe even one of those old AI's too.

I had to fly an Apache with the old type instrument for my initial multi. The scatter-gun panel was terrible. That might be a fun airplane if one never had to fly it under the hood.

Did my 1st actual instrument approach in our Apache, into Atikokan Ontario, off their NDB, in 1 mile in snow- Had my single passenger look for the a/p while I concentrated on keeping the shiny side up. Amasing ! "There it is" !

If I could afford to operate a "recreational" twin, an Apache would be my twin of choice.  Just something about them.  Some think they are so ugly.  I think they are very pretty.  Of course, got my multi in one long time ago.  I think of them as kinda the Aeroncas of the twin world.

My examiner (as in Check Ride for Multi) called it a twin engined Cub.    Actually, it reminded me a lot of a Cherokee, but that may have been co-incidental since (I believe) the Apache predated the Cherokee by several years.

Well, there's always the old Champion Lancer (if you could find one)...pretty close to your "Aeronca in a twin world."  ;-)

Am gaining on being an OF (just turned 56) and did mine in a Beech 95
Travel Air, a close version of the Apache. Then later flew the first models of
the Apache, the one with the second hyd pump under the pilots seat.

If you were smart you took off with the emergency hyd pump handle
extended and ready to use, as if you lost the engine that had the hyd pump
on takeoff you were going down as the drag with everything hanging out was
too much to get any climb out of it. If you were on top of it you could start
pumping and hopefully get the gear up before "terra firma" reached up and
grabbed the plane.

Funny the things you remember about planes you flew 30 years ago...

When I win the lottery, I get a Lancer right after the Apache.  There was one on Barnstormers a few years ago.  I remember 2 of them operating out of the Torrance airport when they were new.  Again, appealing in appearance in a kind of wierd way.
