Wow.  Poor folks of the Fla panhandle and inland.   Anyone on here part of that?   I was going to fly the Chief down to the Thomasville, Ga annual fly in tomorrow.  Unfortunately, they got bore sighted my the hurricane.  At the moment most of the community is without power.  I haven't tried to contact them realizing they are all very busy right now.  I would doubt if they will be able to have the event.  I imagine the event volunteers are going to be needed cleaning up their homes and the community.   Thomasville does have one of the friendliest and nicest fly ins around.  Good people.   And....additionally, for my return Sunday, our local forecast is now for rain all day.    roger

Pouring here in NC.  Winds kicking up as well.  Hope everyone was able to get all the Aeroncas under shelter or very well tied down at a minimum.  Be careful and stay safe!

I left St Petersburg FL today via commercial flight to Raleigh NC. We departed at 0745 and arrived at0915. At that time the storm was over the NC/SC border and moving northeast. Our route circumnavigated the storm to the east and we arrived shortly before the rains began in Raleigh. If I didn’t know that we were avoiding a major tropical storm, I would not have noticed. The ride was smooth and winds were no factor for us at FL390.
Michael was not a problem in the Tampa area. Just breezy and showers. A minor storm surge at high tide yesterday was not damaging. The system pulled very moist and very hot air up from the Caribbean and south Gulf. The humidity and heat are stifling, even by Florida standards.
In Raleigh we are expecting up to 5” of rain and 30-40mph gusts throughout the afternoon and tonight. I wasn’t around here yesterday to help put the 13 flying club airplanes in temporary hangars. I’ve already been recruited to move them back to the ramp tomorrow afternoon.
There is a certain irony in being a Florida resident and being affected by 2 hurricanes in in less than a monthNC. Even more weird is the fact that my airplane is in NC where I’d assume it would be safer this time of year. Thankfully my insurance lady doesn’t know.
My next adventure will be to ferry my plane back south. I need good weather for a low, slow, VFR trip. I generally have two options: Down the Atlantic coast to Jacksonville the across the peninsula; or down over central SC and south GA.
The latter won’t work given the early reports of horrid devastation. I feel terrible for the victims. And my friends and fellow Tar Heels from down east are looking forward to months and years of recovery. Now this in Florida and Georgia is just awful.

I exchanged e-mails with the organizer of the Thomasville fly-in. The event is “on”, and begins tomorrow.

I’m planning on making a side trip to visit Tom Reilly’s place in Douglas, GA on the way down there tomorrow and will probably arrive at Thomasville after lunch.

If you’re close enough to attend, it is a great event. Hope lots of you can attend.

I’ll be camping by my white/yellow RV-6.

Thanks for the info Kyle.   I wish them well and hope it is a huge success.  They certainly deserve it after all that they have been through.   Wish I could do it.  My plane is gassed and prepped.  However, my Sunday return weather up here is gone from bad forecast to worse.  Looks like a big chance of rain for most of Sunday and now continuing for much of Monday.   Shucks!   Didn't make it last year because I still didn't have a motor on the Chief.   Thomasville has a warm place in my heart because I went from 1st grade through 7th grade there.  I would ride my bike out to that airport and just look around.   It was still being used as an aux training field by the USAF for T6  primary training.   roger
