The two par windshield in my 38 its riveted together t to the center piece using tubular rivets and to aply them I think the easiest choice its a bench mounted C frame riveting tool.  Anyone has one that need a good home?

Rafael,

Got any RV building neighbors or acquaintances? There should be one nearby who would loan you a C-frame or a squeezer.  Alternately, they would probably do the riveting for you pretty quickly and for some of the beer you’re hoarding for Joe.

Damn, Joe, now you tell me! I've had a couple rivet holes in my ailerons
that needed plugging. They're filled now, but it took a lontg time!

Don't know anything about RVs but do they rivet through the
plastic/plexiglass or what ever? I'd be very careful that this does not
cause stress and cracks.

Chris,

Have been going on a tool buying spree lately. Several old (85+ years old) friends of mine are
retiring and selling their aircraft tools. Originally I needed the stuff to do work on several
aircraft that I fuss with.

Now have riveters, squeezes, drills (at least 1000 aircraft drill bits of all sizes) and so on out
the wazoo as well as loads of AN and aircraft hardware. Lots of good stuff...

Joe, do tell me, what's the difference between "aircraft drill bits" and
any other drill bit?

Ian (Inquiring minds want to know)

Ian,

That's an easy one... its usually length. Very short, very long, the QC (quick change) bits as
well as the screw mounted bits that go into a drill with a 10/24 mount.

I bought the entire set of tools from a gents family who had passed. He worked in the Air
Force on sheet metal repair and had all sorts of tools. Drill bits to last me a lifetime, cleco's,
reamers, just everything needed for sheet metal work.

SOP on the RV series is to attach plexi with screws or soft pop rivets.

Yeah but Im traying to go 100% original,  Those guys use that tool for some structural stuff for what I gather.

We start a new TV docudrama? This Old Bird? Come on Joe, let's retire
and scratch build airplanes. :-D

Are you sure the original was riveted? As Ian mentioned the opportunity for the windscreen to crack from those rivet hols is astronomical! I would have thought pre-war a screw would have been their first choice. What is the rivet size?

Might work Mark...

One question... am I or the airplane the "Old Bird?" :)

Am helping my next door neighbor at the airport build a Carbon Cub...

Considering the equipment operated by those on this forum, and what
you presently venture the sky, you'd probably be deemed a pup as would
I.

I polished the holes, fitted rubber inserts with rubber washers each
side, and still had two of them crack from the hole. Used screws with
nuts, 6-32 if I remember right.

I'd rather use machine screws and elastic lock nuts.
Pops seem cheap and fast and nothing else... IMHO.

If the hole is oversize, slightly countersunk from both sides, and sanded smooth, then you might get away with rivets as long as they don't  expand outward when pulled to completely fill the hole.
Lot of ifs there.

Two piece windshield? Strip in the middle? Rivets to hold it all together? It's gonna take a squeezer with a really big throat to get to most of the rivets. Maybe the warbird guys at Chino have something with a throat big enough. jrh
