I'm seriously considering upgrading my Champ's restraint system to a 4-point system that Spruce sells. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/faabelts3.php?clickkey=407539

Does anybody have any experience with this and the big question is does the headliner have to come down for the installation?  I do have lots of zippers throughout the headliner.  Any thoughts or ideas?

Ryan, I don't know about the Spruce harness, but it did the Hooker Champ 5 point, and it was fairly straight forward. All was pretty easy, except the for the front seat shoulder harness. I worked it through the one zipper across the headliner. I did not have tabs, so I did the wrap around approach. Drilling the slots in the wood was a #*/;!, but doable. I do love them.

Ryan, have a friend re building a 7EC and was visiting him yesterday
and today. It is very difficult to find anywhere above the head liner to
fix the shoulder straps onto for the front seat. There is only one
diagonal tube which I don't think you could use. What had been fitted to
his project in the past was a system that fastens onto the front seat
frame at the back. but I don't like this as it means crushing you down
with the straps if in a crash. For the back they had done similar but it
was with cable that fastened low down behind the luggage compartment.
Again not good.
I think with the Champ it is a very difficult project to get something
that works well.

Ryan,

Have installed Hooker 4 points front and back in my Champ. I was able to install them without removing the headlining. Had one zipper behind the attach point (see photo) and one in front. I used the wrap around method but had clearance between the timber and the fuselage tube so installation was relatively painless. The rear was wrapped around the fuselage cluster behind and above the baggage sack. From memory this cluster was accessed after removing the rear seat and baggage sack. Other photo shows the straps attached to the rear of the front seat to keep the belts at shoulder height.

Greg, I'm going to forward your mail on to Clin Ashton-Martin as I don't
like the way his was done and they way he is going to do it as it would
be a great spine crusher in case of a spill. I'll send him your e mail
address and recommend he contact you direct on this.
I went to the "short wing Piper" fly in at Wentworth last weekend and
called in at his place on the way back.
