This is a followup after I was kindly provided a Wagner STC for an O-200 and my jaw dropped at the number of new / fabricated parts required, $ and time... Then I went to the Service Bulletin for an 11AC to 11BC conversion with a C85-8 and priced up all the parts required (engine cowlings, dorsal fin + misc parts) and realized yet another expensive / time consuming upgrade.

So then on to the next: If you would like a more simple and much cheaper "equivalent" conversion that allows you to keep your original exhaust, cowling, baffles and fuel tank then consider my A-65 to C-85 conversion. in a post by Lasher himself.

Does anyone have a copy of this STC for the 11AC?  Much appreciated!

The real question, is the Lasher STC still available by the STC holder. Not legal to just buy a copy off the street. If it is an "orphaned" STC, there are other avenues to get approval. I'll check on the status when I get to work.

Matt,
I believe that David Lasher is still selling the STC. Also Bill Pancake
has an STC for 85 hp conversion for the Chief.
I don't have either individual's phone or email info handy.

When I was refurbishing my Champ It had been modified with Lasher’s STC. There was no STC certificate in the records. I was able to re-purchase the STC from his son. This was a couple of years ago.

If the 7AC STC is still available for sale hopefully the 11AC will also be available.

This is what I read about Bill Pancake's STC... I will give him a call and post here what he says.   This is not official but sounds like the cheapest upgrade path based on an article I found online (just need a reverse rotation tach and a lightweight starter if you've got the battery mount already):

The following are STC options:
(C85-12)• Replace tachometer with clockwise rotation
• Requires no change to fuel system
• The original A65 exhaust system maybe used (Y type stack) or Cessna 150 Exhaust
• The original A65 baffling maybe used with slight modification for the starter installation
• Battery location either on firewall or behind passenger seat.
• Large vertical fin is not required but is optional
• Electrical system is optional
• Marvel Schebler Carburetor MA3SPA/10-4240 may be used
• Starter can be either Sky-Tec or B & C

Update for everyone on here: Bill Pancake's STC is the way to go.  I just spoke with him on the STC - here's what you can do:

Use all your A65 engine bafflings and mounts
Can use your A65 Y pipe exhaust
No modifications to the airframe
Need an Odyssey battery installed per the STC - behind your seat or on the dash
Need a Skytec or B&C starter

And drumroll.... for you sport pilots out there... in the works is a supplement to the STC to be approved in about 3 months to increase the gross weight to the sport pilot limit of 1320lbs, requiring NO MODIFICATIONS!

This made my day :)

Matt,

Did he say how much he's selling the STC for?

Thanks,

David Lasher is the grandson of Charley and the only legal seller of this STC.

The STC is $300 and he'll send you the supplement once it is released whereby your A&P would take the supplement and 337 the weight increase.  I could use that +70lbs for my beer gut and to carry another passenger :)  He needs all your info - 11AC serial number, tail number, engine serial number, and your contact information for the FAA as well as the $$$.  Just need to find a good C85-12 now...

I can't recall ever being this lucky.  C85-12 with 750SMOH with a Skytech starter on its way to my A&P with all logs since new, last run 2 months ago, 2 hours after talking with Bill Pancake about the STC requirements I got a phone call for the engine.  STC will be here in a few weeks after I get Bill Pancake the info.

And once the addendum to 1320 gross weight comes through, I think these Chiefs are going to be in high demand with the useable load (going to use my wind generator to save lbs).  A 2 person plane once again...

Will be nice to push a button to start and get 85HP.  Excited to fix the paint and interior now and get my ultra sport pilot Chief as pretty as it should be :)

And if I told you what I paid for the engine you'd flip.  I can basically sell my 150SMOH A65 engine, buy the extra parts, and end up in positive territory.  What a great day!

Hope this thread helps out a few other sport pilots :)

I wonder if that 1320 gross weight STC upgrade will work on a 11BC as well or just an 11AC?  I suppose it depends on how it's written up.  Jim Chuk

I had a nice talk with Bill Pancake today about his STC.  He should have it ready in a couple of months.  It will apply to my 11BC as well as the 11AC.  The gross weight will then be 1320 lbs.  Thanks Matt for the heads up on this.  Jim Chuk
