[f-AA] Drippy Champ C-65 Carb

I've got one of those drippy nose Champ C-65 Carbs. Normally before shut down I have been shutting the fuel valve and run it till it quits to aleviate the problem. Some of my other Champ friends seem to all have the same problem and do the same. I worry about a possible backfire fire at startup however. My carb was recently overhauled as were some of other friend Champ owners, but only solved the problem for a short time. I know it must be the needle and seat leaking. Does the angle of a taildragger on the ground have anything to do with it? I am thinking of removing it and having my mech take a look at it for float level adjustment. Any ideas anyone? My Stromberg on my A65 will leak a tank of fuel in a couple of days if I
don't turn off the fuel valve after flight. Some do, some don't, and
apparently no guarantee that a rebuild of the float needle and seat will
correct it. Just nature of the Strombergs, I understand.

Lapped my steel needle in with Bon-Ami and polished w/ toothpaste on my cub
and also on the Funk. Funk still hasn't flown,but gas is still there with no
leak. Put 50 hrs on the Cub w/ no leaks. It is worth a try if you have a

Carl,
Same problem for years. I just shut the fuel valve off before shutting
off the mags, and it solves the problem. As long as the engine is running,
it seems to pull all available fuel into the engine, so I don't see a safety
issue.

I don't think you need to run it dry, but some prefer to do that anyway as
an extra safety factor (in case a p-lead is loose and someone pulls the prop
while the plane is stored).

Carl, mine used to be real bad. I took it off and had John Joye look at it.
We polished the needle and seat (best I remember) and that pretty much
solved the problem. Still will leak some if left on but I,too, run mine out
of fuel before shutdown,unless I'm flying more that day. I always pull the
shutoff even if I have not run it out of fuel.

My experience is that most Strombones leak.  No particular needle and seat type fairs better.  Have had best luck with lapping the all metal assembly, but that is not a given.  Look at it this way.  Shutting down with the fuel valve purges the cylinders of residual fuel, reducing , but not totally eliminating, the probability of an accidental ignition.  Also keeps the valve free of corrosion.
