Hi all, I broke an old Cleveland wheel the other day and need a new one and I want to keep my mechanical brakes. I'm pretty sure they are Goodyears. (I'm currently out of town and my mech thinks he remembers they are Goodyears). Sound right?
I've been trying to make sense out of the mish mash of posts I've seen in various places spanning many years.
Anybody have the definitive answer on where I can get newer wheels that my mechanical brakes will work with and do I need any special paperwork?

Rusty,

An inquiring mind would like to know how this happen, with the hope of not repeating your misfortune. There was a wheel for sale on eBay recently, may be a source for a replacement. I read an article recently that recommended raising the air pressure to help protect the wheel during a less than smooth landing.

Looks like a DMB outer half I have on my VanSyckle brakes. Are your brakes disc or drum?

Your mechanic might want to look through here. (Cleveland wheel and brake guide)

Richard,

Sounds like you have the same DMB/Van Sickle configuration as I have on the Champ. How much torque do you apply to the wheel halves when reassembling?

Thanks.

I use 90 in/lbs that I arrived at using the Cleveland data found in their maintenance manual. (3050) (40-7)

I did use the wheel for the American Champion 7AC as the closest to our wheel.

Hi Rusty,

That looks like a Cleveland wheel, so I don't think you have Goodyear disc mechanical brakes. Can you take, or have your mechanic take more pictures?

If you need a replacement wheel, I have both types. I'm getting $100 a wheel half, or $200 a wheel, plus freight. Money back less shipping if not happy with the part.

Richard,

I'm very interested in a complete DMB wheel set.

Please advise with address.

Thanks.

Hi Jim,

The wheels I'm offering Rusty are DHB, as removed from a 7EC with hydraulic drum brakes. They are the later version of the DMB, and are direct replacements. They are stronger, rated 1500#, and do not have the AD. Those are the ones I'm selling for $100/half wheel.

However, if you are doing an installation on an Aeronca that you are restoring to the nth degree of original, I have a set of DMB wheels, dust covers, and Aeronca embossed hub caps for $1000. This is not a good value in my opinion, the original wheels are not as good, but the DMB is the original setup, and they are very rare.

Another wheel that works, but I have no extras of, is the 40-28, which I use on my 7CCM with mechanical drum brakes.

Before you buy anything you should root around locally, a lot of the Piper 20/22  models used the DHB, so poke around in those hangars first, many have been upgraded to hydraulic disc and the old wheels are under a bench somewhere.

Richard,

Thanks. I torque them to 85 in/lbs, so I'll bump it up to 90 at the next annual.

Hi Richard,

I'm about to begin a restoration, but don't plan on going to nth degree, just want to make it legal. I like the thought of using the 7EC DHB wheels, I wonder what kinda paperwork would be required.

That is legal because it is in the TCDS. You should be able to to a 337 and reference the TCDS.
