I need to order some spark plugs for my Continental C85-12 engine but my Continental parts manual shows a Champion 62S or a C26S. I am unable to find them in the Spruce catalog. My mags are Bendix SL4N-21 it that is important.

Aren't those some very old spark plug numbers?  Champion shows REM 40E or 37BY as correct plug for the C85 in their listings.  roger

I found those brand new old stock on ebay for under 50 bucks for a set of 8.
We already have them in ours so I bought a set to have.
Our old Champ had REM37BYs in it.

I'm using the Tempest equivalent to the short Champion I think REM37BY,
but I had two fail in the same cylinder simultaneously. I think they
failed by shorting through the insulation around the "cigarette" end but
haven't had a chance to test further.

The question is whether you have a shielded ignition harness or an unshielded one. The C26 plugs are only compatible with an unshielded harness. The harness, the spark plugs, and sometimes the magneto model must all be either a shielded version or an unshielded version. You're S4LN-21 mags can use either a shielded or non-shielded harness. You will need to choose spark plugs to match your harness unless you are going to replace the harness, too. In the past, I don't recall you complaining about ignition noise in your radio so I am gonna guess you have a shielded harness. If so, you cannot use the C26 plugs. You are getting advice from your mechanic who knows what parts you have on your airplane and what legally works with what you have? jrh

Although Champion is said to have fixed its production problem, the company lost a significant amount of customer loyalty. Many changed to use Tempest plugs (and filters) which in my experience are excellent. I'm surprised that you had two fail. I reckon neither is perfect.

Dan, yes that was the resistor failing on Champions, which was why I
went to Tempest. (And they are cheaper) They had only been in a short time.
Originally I had BG 706 in and they seemed to last for ever. Then on an
annual I found the resistor open in one, but it had never shown up on a
mag drop check. Must have been jumping the gap??
