Guys,

I have Buzz's STC which allows the installation of either a Lycoming O-235 or a Continental O-200 in the 7AC Champ.   On page 12, it reads "Clamp-on Dorsal Fin, Specification #618 is recommended BUT not required under the STC."

His STC increases the gross weight to 1300 pounds, keeps the vertical fin looking original, allows for several choices of propellers and exhaust systems and finally, no electrical system is required.   I spoke to Buzz about the need for a dorsal fin.  He recalled that the Army required L-16's to recover from a spin in some fraction of a turn and with only minimal pilot input.   Buzz said "the pilot would have to be about two points above plant life in order to need that dorsal".    By Buzz's account, to win the Army contract, Aeronca may have simply given the appearance of what the Army wanted.

Hope that helps,

Carl

Great job Carl, but doesn't it also state in Buzz's STC that the aircraft should be brought up to or meet the 7CCM specifications?

Service Letter 15 requires the dorsal to meet 7CCM specifications.

Richard in OH with a 7CCM 'CONV' and Buzz's STC wondering if he could have removed the dorsal when he recovered the fuselage.

What kind of wheels?

Richard in Creswell, with what appears to be a complete set of Goodyear wheels and brakes.

Two questions. 1: Do you happen to 2 new grease seals that fit those wheels? 2: What would need to part (sell) with 1 set (1 inner, 1 outer) JB N34585

Yes Coe Wagner sells the STC but you have to catch him early 1200z or late 0100z each day by phone.
He only has a POTS so calling anytime is impossible unless he happens to be in the house.

Roger M-

Yes Cole has fiberglass cowlings and a plethera of parts. Again he is difficult to reach unless you catch him before he starts his day or at the end of it. Anything in between is simply chance he is in the house. They used to have a phone in the hangar that would ring there and in the house, but when they reinvented the POTS phone system several years ago that configuration had to go.

Richard in OH who had to call the Chamber of Commerce initially to establish contact and now I routinely reach him.

Try calliing Cole circa 1200z or 0100z. He is on Central time and that should be 7AM or 8PM his time.

Richard in OH who was amazed at all of the items Buz Wagner had fabricated for Aeronca aircraft in addition to Stinson and Luscombe.

I have a spare original cowl from a TF that would work well for a pattern.  It's got several patches.  Needs good home.  Just pay freight.

A school wanted it and their interest dissolved.

No idea of the cost. I would anticipate $250-$300 which is typical for STCs of this type.

Richard in OH who recalls paying $310 for Bill Pancake's C-85 upgrade for a Chief.

Carl,
I have a Super Champ project that I bought in Alaska.  However it lists some other STC for the modification.  When I looked it up, it did not exist.  How much for the STC?  I want to get it flying again.
