Well I should have added next couple of stops in this world win tour,     Vegas Sunday thru Wed next week, then to Southern CA, on Thursday thru Sunday.   If anyone is in area with some time would love to chat and see your plane.

 Ted,
I wish I could help, but I traded my Aeronca for a Fairchild. It's going
to make its first flight sometime this weekend after 18 years on the
ground. I'm just 50 miles north of MKC.
If you haven't heard, KC is having the American Royal BarB-Q contest. KC
at its finest. Don't miss it.
Tomorrow morning my EAA chapter is flying kids in Atchison, KS. Again,
50mi NW of KC. One of our pilots is a Champ flier. She does love that
little plane.
 I don't know how anyone can afford Signature.....Ramp Fee + $6.25/ gal
avgas. I guess it helps pay for the pretties. <G>
Saturday mornings are always busy at the Gardner, KS airport, even a
Champ for lessons about 20 SW of MKC. Lots of antiques out there.
If I can help with any info, just give me a call.

The 880 was the favorite ship among us cattle flying out of ATL back in the day. The story circulating among the business pax was that the pilots were competing for the fastest time from lift off to landing on various trips. I distinctly remember it being common for the first flight of the day to Miami taking just over an hour.
Several years ago I read about an effort to restore an 880 by a group of retired airline guys.  It seems to have failed.  Very sad.
There is a very interesting description of Howard Hughes' role in the decision and process at TWA to develop and purchase the 880 for their fleet In a book written in 1983 by Robert Serling. I have a copy if anyone cares to borrow it. It is avery dull read but does contain some interesting inside info. For example who rembers that the original name proposed by Convair was Skylark but Hughes wanted to develop an anodized gold shade skin that would never need paint and wanted to call the ship the Golden Arrow.

If a person has not been sitting on Sepulveda Blvd at the approcah end of LAX 25L when a TWA water hauler B707 was taking off, they have't really seen/heard a true example of smoke and noise (although early SAC KC135s were just about as good).  I was a ZLA L.A area arrival/departure sectors controller back then.  The LAX departures would come over to us just shortly after crossing the shore line west bound (I never did really understand what LAX departure control really did other than say hello/goodby in about one minute).  We would then, for the ones going northeast , give them a right turn heading 045, direct Hector (or was it Daggett)  when able.  Prior to the departures arriving in close proximity to the San Gabrial mountains, we would have to check their altitude (before encoders) to be out of 9,000' and then 14,000'.   TheTWA  B707/Ws never made either altitude (actually many UAL B720s didn't either).  We would have to turn them east to stay south of the mountains until they had enough altitude to escape the L.A. basin area to the northeast.  On occasions they were so guttless, that out around Ontario we would have to turn them right back to a west heading to gain more altitude.  I'd forgotten about all that until you were talking about old jets.  roger Anderson, Murfreesboro, TN (based SYI)

my earliest memories are of those early 707s,DC8s,880s,and 990s,blasting off of JFK,trailing copious streams of black smoke, engines thundering on takeoff, and screaming on arrival, for a kid like me it was a little slice of heaven, and roger that on the KC135,i lived under the flightpath of WrightPatt in Dayton, in the late 80's,whenever an early mark KC135 came over it was total deja vu,a JFK flashback, noise, smoke, the whole 9 yards.

My brother retired from AA (really TWA a few years ago, (don't mention Carl Icahn in his presence).  Anyway he was at TWA when they retired their 707s.  Most or all of the planes went to the Kansas City overhaul base and the turbofans and big tails were removed and sold to the Air Force for use on their KC-135s many of which were still water wagons at that time.  He sent me pictures of the process but I don't recall what I did with them.

My hanger neighbor, same thing.  He was greatful to have had an additional two years at AAL after his many years with TWA, but severly disliked those last two years.

My Fairchild flying friend was with Continental is the same way with Frank Lorenzo.  He left Continental after the takeover and spent the remainder of his career as a corporate pilot flying Falcons for a large trucking company near here.

Hey Steve,
Hate to hear that, seems like always something.
Yea... alot of the weekend seems to be a blur (self induced of course) but a good one.
Went to Gardner A/P like you suggested, Met several nice people, John Swander is one that i will for sure remember, After a good lunch and some chit chat, he offered to Take myself and a friend up for a ride in his 32' Waco. That topped off a great weekend in KS. It was especially fun for my friend, After being in the Navy flying F18's and other jets for his whole career, He had never been in any kind of Vintage or Piston Engine aircraft. Needless to say he has the bug now.

Thanks again,
Ted

Ted/Bill (forget which!)

Are you in the Ontario area? We just landed at Guardian in Ontario and depart about 11:00
tomorrow (Sunday) so thought I would ask.
