Here's a half print of the interior of one of the three C3's my dad had and I flew.  Can't remember which one this was.   roger

Hey Joe.  Unfortunately, all destroyed.  The '35 was donated to the aviation museum in San Diego.  It burned up when the museum burned years ago.  The '31 was stored in a barn in N. Calif.  The barn collapsed and crushed it.  The '37 crashed on takeoff some years ago injuring the two persons on board.  The wreckage was listed on Barnstormers a year or so ago.   Pictures of two of them were taken by me at Torrance in about '61/'62.  The '35 (N12564) was taken by me at Compton in '59.  roger

I believe that is the '37.  I noticed in the right side of the pic a wobble pump.  I seem to remember an aux tank installed and the pump could pump fuel up to the header tank.   roger

Found another pic of the '37.  You can see the aux tank filler neck.   roger

Hey Ian.  Yea...we were high tech.  We flew out of Torrance mostly which had a city owned control tower initially and then an FAA tower.  Our first C3, the '35, had a single crystal transmitter and a low freq receiver.  The '31 and '37 had the more modern VHF radio you see.  I think it had maybe three crystals to transmit and a tune-able receiver.   roger

When I was leaving South Africa to return to Australia I had to reduce
"possessions" and I remember giving away some of those old radios. So
wish I'd kept them now!

Hi,  I'm planning a trip from NH to Cincinnati next week in the Chief.  In planning the flight it looked like going into Clermont County Airport in Batavia might be less expensive than going into Lunken.  Is anyone familiar with the area and could pass along some thoughts on rental cars and hotels.  I saw this note on the internet and decided it might be nice to have some local input on the stay.

REPORT: Cincinnati ranks #1 for bed bugs

Any suggestions sure would be appreciated.

Thanks Steve in NH

Steve, where is you final destination in Cincy? Used to fly around there a lot, but that was in the 70s.....

That looks like a Nova-Star radio. I have one in my old aircraft radio collection.
They even made a VOR head that could be used with the tunable receiver.

I'm going to a wedding downtown, but plan to stay outside in a smaller town and drive in.  I also have a granddaughter in college there I plan to visit, she's in the downtown area also.

Sounds like Clermont County would be good if they have rental cars. It is much more Outer suburban, near rural. Lunken is a fine airport, birthplace of Aeroncas, but much more of an industrial area. Closer to downtown, but a bit of a drive out to the smaller towns.
I used to fly with a friend in his Champ there in the early 70s.
Also, Lunken tends to get weathered in (IFR) more often because it sits down in a bowl.

Watch the approach from the North into Clermont county, there is a small ridge at the end of the runway that can create some surprise turbulence. On short final.

Is your granddaughter at University of Cincinnati? I have a niece there too.

Hope this helps!

Sporty's is at Clermont County and I'm not sure if they have rental cars. There are't many motel choices on the east side (!-275) HAO in Hamilton is another option.and you have I-75 to downtown. It is also closer to the University of Cincinnati.

I used to pass through Cincinnati fairly often as a Comair pax. I found it to be great fun to, with a straight face, ask the ticket counter person about how to get a tour of the WKRP studios.

Steve,
I flew into Lunken once with a burn patient on Childrens' Flight of Hope to the Shriner Hospital. The KLUK FBO waived the fuel cost for topping off a Cessna Chancellor. They routinely did this for these flights saving the non-profit charity a bunch of money.
Because of their generosity, I used Lunken as a fuel stop several times going to and from Oshkosh.  The service is excellent and there is a good restaurant in the old terminal. Tie down fee was waved with a fuel purchase.  Easy in and out for VFR and IFR traffic and the controllers were easy to work with.
Fuel costs are almost $2 cheaper at Clermont according to the AirNav  web site.  I rationalized the additional costs for fuel at Lunken on the grounds that I would not be tempted to spend money at Sporty's.
In most cities, Enterprise rental cars will bring the car to you if you call ahead and reserve.  This can be cheaper than renting through the big city FBO's and almost as convenient.

### As for bed bugs, I'm not an expert but I'd guess they are slightly less annoying than Buckeye fans.  But I'm a biased graduate of another fine Big 10 university.  And MMO is probably ineffective against both pests. :)
Have a good trip.

Here's a shot of the panel of an Ercoupe we had not long after the C3s.  You'll notice it was indeed high tech with a Narco.  roger

Craig.   You are absolutely right!!  Nova Star it was, made by Nova Tech located in Manhattan Beach.   We lived in Manhattan Beach at the time.  We also later had the Nova Tech nav head which was in one of the later aircraft we had.  At a time, when radios such as Narco and the other major manufacturers were pretty expensive, Nova Tech was a heck of a deal.  Nothing fancy, but they worked great.  roger

Craig.  It's your lucky day, being the winner of the Nova Star recognition contest.  I just found a pic of another Ercoupe we had.  Look at that panel.  The Nova Star radio with the Nova Star nav head.  roger

Hi Steve. I guess it depends on what you're going to do in Cincy. Clermont County is a pretty good way from downtown Cincy. Lunken however is right near downtown so cabs are really easy to catch and of course there are lots of hotels nearby. Lunken has a control tower and is inside the mode C veil  for CVG so a transponder is necessary, but it is a nice airport with a restaurant on the field and I have been able to park at one of the FBOs free just for filling up with gas. Lunken  was Cincy's original commercial airport and the old terminal building is still there. That is where the restaurant is and believe it or not there is a C3 hanging from the ceiling! Well that makes sense because this was the original location of the Aeronca factory. And I have also often seen a B-17 parked there. Back to Clermont County – as you may know that is where Sportys pilot shop is located and they have free hotdogs on Saturday morning. People there are very nice and would certainly help you find transportation and hotel. Let me know if I can be of any further help.
