Is the consensus of the group that American Magneto Services in Montana is the best place to send a pair of Slick Mags and harness for overhaul?

Or somewhere else?

I will be installing a newly rebuilt (not Factory overhaul, but nice) A-65 in June, and was planning on swapping the Slick mags I have to the new engine - they've worked so well for so long - when I was surprised to hear the right mag backfiring and large RPM drop on run-up on Saturday.  Of course I didn't fly, but just taxiied back and tied down.

When I got home, I thought about it and realized it had been a while since these were overhauled, and the harness is showing a lot of wear.  So I decided to drive back to the airport on Sunday and remove the magnetos for sending out to refurb.

So I'm looking for the best place to send these for overhaul.

It says Slick 4333 on the data plate, by the way

John,

What about checking with Slick for an exchange?

Probably a good choice for West Coasters. If you live farther east and
don't want to send your mags all the way to Montana, I recently used
Professional Aircraft Accessories in Amelia, Ohio (Near Cinci) to do a
500 hr inspection and was very happy with their service. (513) 732-3361

If you are referring to Aircraft Magneto Service in Missoula, then yes, I'm a big fan of theirs.   They are the mag service that relocated from Washington state.  I had a 500 hr service done (750 hrs on the mags by then).  Their prices were very reasonable, for airplane prices anyhow.  Their customer service is outstanding.   Question..just call them and they will happily give you all the info you want.   They and their web site will explain that for Slicks, a 500 hr is good.  However, for an overhaul, parts prices are way too expensive and an exchange for new mags is best.  They also have very competitive prices on exchange for new.   No.....don't own any stock in them.   roger

Oh...you will notice that an inspection of your mags is free (you pay shipping).  Maybe a 500 hrs service is all you need.  That does replace parts as needed.   Or, they can tell you not serviceable.   roger....again

Just did my mags last annual, very happy with the results from Montana.

As am I! We gave them a lot of work when they were in WA, and they came through with top quality, saved money wherever possible, quick service, and tons of free advice.

John,

The same thing happened to me after my C85-12 was overhauled. The engine would run but it would backfire and I had a large mag drop on one of the mags. Turned out that the engine shop had installed one of the mags 180 deg out, it took a while to figure out what the problem was.

Well, this happened in my existing engine, which worked absolutely perfectly the week before.
I hadn't made any changes to the engine, wiring, timing, etc.

By the way, everyone:  What is the consensus regarding the harness?  It's at least 10 years old, and is looking a bit shabby in places.  Do you send it in to Aircraft Magnet Services along wiht the magnetos, or does it get refurbed elsewhere?

AMS can test the harness.   But I never thought about repair, always thought new for replacement.  AMS is easy to talk to.  Just give a call and ask them.   As they say in their web site, call before you pull anything.  Somethmes they can offer a fix to your problem over the phone.   roger

I've replaced a couple of bad ignition wires on a C-85 using new leads cut to match the existing ones. The kit had a pen vice, bit, crimping pliers, and wire cutter. Much cheaper than replacing the entire harness and very easy to do with the correct tools.

Richard in OH who can't find the ignition wire anywhere in bulk anymore.

I just went back to your original post. I'm wondering if you may have a stuck valve. It may be worth your time to check.
And do you have a maintenance history on your mags? I.e. When new and installed and how many hours on each? This info help determine what the repair/replacement options are available given the manufacture's Service Bulletin.
In any event, putting fresh mags and harness on a new engine is probably going to be cost effective in the long run if your existing stuff is reaching the end of its serviceable life.
Good luck

Richard,

Where did you get the kit?

Pretty sure it isn't a stuck valve, because the engine operated normally on the left Mag. Only on the right Mag did it splutter and backfire.

Replace them w/shielded leads, either you, or the magneto shop.

They are shielded.

The AI I asked to replace the leads had everything in a box, brand new, and handed it to me and said figure it out. Read the instructions and took my time on the first one, then two more in the blink of an eye. He died a couple of years ago and I have been looking for bulk shield lead without luck.

Richard in OH who no longer has a need at this time, but would like to know where to go the next time.

You missed my point; Replace them because they are suspect, and the new ones should be shielded also.

Ah.  Thanks for the clarification.
I'm sending the wiring harness with the mags to Aircraft Magneto Services, and they will test them with a high voltage do-dad and give me a recommendation.

Thank you, everyone, for the information, advice, and support!
