Found this derelict airplane, stripped of the N numbers and any external identification, on the
west ramp up at Arlington.  Decided that a RC modeler would probably like a lot of detail photos of
one, even in this shape.   Sad, but then again, with the price of gas and keeping two engines in good shape
it's not worth that much.

I didn't realize that the back seater had a panel on the ceiling!    You can tell there was a lot of engineering done
for the 26 or so planes that they produced.   You can see the yoke and the fake gear up/down switch on the panel
too.

Single engine ceiling was 2000 feet.

Enjoy.

Where's Craig McVeigh? Wasn't your goal to have one of every plane Aeronca built? :-)

I've always had the  hots for a Lancer. Just don't know why.  So unique, so unusual.  Same vintage as the Champion Tri Con.  Another not very good idea of that era.  And keeping in mind, a 2000' single engine ceiling is a density altitude ceiling.  On any summer day at most sea level airports, its AGL single engine ceiling would be zip, nada, zero.   But...I still want one.  roger

That has to be a money pit but would be a great project for a museum piece.

Somebody ought to save it--if the data plate is still on it you could get all the info needed. Not a big mystery..

Rob, I just saw this.  Mark I can't believe that I didn't know this was here.  But it looks like it's over on the Paul Allen side.  My C-2 is in the blue hangars in the far background.  (the cheep side)  When I see that many pictures of a plane I kind of consider it as good as a Pre-Buy Inspection!!!  I've bought worse with less info.

I'm not is Seattle right now.  I'm chasing Aeronca parts and working on other money pits.  Maybe he'll take a Cessna 310 straight across?  I really do need one at some point.  I see there is one on Barnstormers.  I'll have to go check it out upon my return.

Thanks to all for the info.  This is just one more thing we need to talk about in Middletown.

The book Aeronca's Citabria's Decathaolons and Scouts talks a bit about the Lancer. One of the things they said was that for certification, the FAA made them move the location of the engines from more of a mid wing to on top of the wing because of visibility concerns. Apparently this really effected the performance of the wing in a very negative way contributing to its miserly performance.

O 200s never gave it a chance.  With one of them windmilling and dragging that side, and the 100 hp of a Cessna 150 engine  pulling asymmetrically on the other side, the effective thrust left to fly the plane was probably only 60 to 70 hp, or about that of an A65.  roger    But...I still want one.......

Thinking of the Lancer, which I first saw while hanging out at Torrance, Ca in the early 60s, reminded me of another unusual aircraft.  That is the Wing Derringer which was built at Torrance about then.  It was a super sleek design with about a 200kt cruise.  The first prototype had 0 235s on it.  That wasn't enough and were replaced with O 320s.  However...it was a two place only.  The thought was that a businessman seldom carries a passenger and even then seldom more than one.  It was a fine little machine.  With production issues, an crash or two, and the business world issues, the Derringer never made it into production other than a very few being built.   I do remember frequently watching the prototypes come and go at Torrance.   Pics attached...including a Lancer.   roger

There was one in a hangar at KOAK when I was just getting started. Being as how I flew behind one of them O-320s, I was in total awe of how much power two would be:) Never saw it fly, not sure it was airworthy, but, boy, I LIKED it! My educated impression is that I would STILL like it, and would love to fly one.

Found my photos.  Here's the most likely candidate for this plane when it was 33 years younger...at Arlington or Bayview....can't remember which.  Looks like
Arlington, but we had the FlyIn at Bayview that year.  So either the photos are mislabeled with the date or its something else.

Now there are two in the database in WA state.  One in eastern Washington which a sale might be reported and one who is owned by someone at Ocean Shores, a beach front community.  The Ocean Shores one is Serial Number 1, yes construction number 1.   It's not too far fetched to think that a retired person at Ocean Shores may have bought this one and left it up at Arlington.   The plot thickens.

This one pictured is serial Number 22.  Now owned by someone in Alaska, which could be the same issue as the Ocean Shores one.  Owning and storing are two different things.

I'll have to look at the photos, but I was looking through the windows
in real time and didn't see one.  It had so much dust on the windows
it was hard to see.   I'm going to search some older photos from the 1980s
and see if I took a photo of the one that was on the airport back then.
If the colors and scheme match, maybe that's a place to start.

Yeah, that seemed to be pretty close to what I would expect for a finished airplane.

Like someone once told me, just because it's rare and old doesn't mean it's worth a bunch. Now an LC, that would be worth it!

It’s not always easy to convince folks what a realistic price is for a project and it’s sad to see stuff that could be restored rot into the ground because of that.

I see a Twin Navion project for sale on barnstormers for about half the price of the Lancer.  Also classic and unique and somewhat more useful as a multi-engine airplane when flyable.
