I have Bendix mags on my C90-12F, the motor is 300 hours SMOH but has not been run for years, I have it pickled while I rebuild the Champ, should I rebuild them (I know they work as they belted me when turning over the pistons ). Is there a preferred supplier for the rebuild kit?

I replaced the Case non-shielded for a pair of SF4RN-8's 2 years ago. Nothing wrong with the Case after 35 years that I had them...just got tired of the noise on the handheld. I kind of miss the impulse couplings, but
the Bendix have never failed to start (except when hot...occasionally). I did find a pair of s4rn-21 (impulse) and -20 mags of the correct model for the 65. Haven't put them on yet. Maybe I will at the next annual.
Figs. If you decide you want to get them rebuilt, I was really happy with this place. It was recommended to me by someone else on this list when I had my Slicks serviced. They are super nice people who will talk to you about what you want or need, and they do good work at a fair price with quick turn around. roger
I don't think you can, but can you mix S20s and SF4s? I'm still having an issue with the right mag. Flew for 1.7 hours yesterday in 70 degree "heat" and the right one was barely running when I did a mag check upon returning.
Thanks Dave... this is a A65-8F. Can you have SF4s on the left and the S20 series on the right?
I put a NOS coil and new condenser from Fresno in the right mag a couple of years ago and it didn't solve the problem. Wires scope well, changed plugs top to bottom and its still there. Suppose I could have gotten
a bad NOS, but what are the odds?

John/Donato,
My hot start experience is much the same. Both prop start Continental's I've flown restart hot much, much better if I shut the fuel off and let the carb empty. I simply turn the fuel back on a couple of minutes before restarting but do not prime. Most of the time, they start on the first blade.
Harvey, who has overheated a prop starter before I learned this trick.
All my A65s have always been easy starters cold, if you knew the secret of that particular engine. For most, it seems like 6 blades cold will do it, although my current new/old one likes 7 blades best. However....when hot, nothing will flood easier than an A65. Therefore, like Harvey, I never prime (pull through blades) when it's hot unless it has been sitting for at least 2 hours. And like Harvey, I always shut down by shutting off fuel. Then when ready to start, I just make mags hot and start propping. It will usually start on the 2nd through 4th blade. And....I pretty much guarantee that if it has not started by the 8th blade, it is flooded, and you can prop for the next hour without it starting. (My local A&P shop did just that...after I told him when ready, tell me and I would come up and start it...but he didn't). When it floods, you are going to have to unload with 10 to 12 backward flips of the blade...with throttle full open...and switch off. And...there is never a more important time when propping than the next step...that is closing the throttle before you next try to prop it. My opinion.......roger
