This goes along with the post I made a while back about the landing
gear on air force phantoms. Does anyone have a picture or parts
breakdown drawing of the main wheel for an air force or export
phantom? Still trying to figure out how the wheel bearings are
installed.

Thanks,

jerogers

Check this album in the 5053phantoms.com Gallery. There are lots of
pictures showing the nose- and main wheels.

I can tell you, But it would be hard to explain.
There is a pressure plate and a backup plate along with 13 stacks of
alternating rotors and stators.
the wheel has 2 sets of races that are held into place by a hardened
rubber seal that had a small tab on it. The rubber seal was held tight
in place by a retaining ring with a small pig-tail at one end that fit
through a hole in the seal into the center hub... the spring ( like a
split ring) was slightly compress and then positioned witin a groove
along in the inside diameter of the center hub, and then released. the
spring pressure effectivfely held the rubber seal in place.
You would then install the backup plate and alternating rotors and
stators ( brake stack)and finally the pressure plate. Bolts were anti-
siezed and then installed and tightened to a specified tourque in an
alternating pattern and then safety-wired in sets of two to prevent
backing-off. on the inboard side of the wheel the anti-skid sensor was
reinstalled and safety wired also. Kick it and you were DONE!
