I remember the bad smell during the engine start with cartridges. Back
in the eighties we did that every Friday when our aircraft left for
the second sortie. Cold that be done with all J79 /J79-17 engines or
where for example the Navy/Marines engines on the F-J/N/S Modell
different?

Cheers

The J-79-15 & -17 engines used by the Air Force had a completely
different starter system than the -8 and -10 used by the Navy & Marine
Corps. Each Air Force engine had an individual turbine starter
powered either by relatively low pressure air or by a pyrotechnic
cartridge which turned the engine mechanically. Navy/Marine J-79s
had a turbine inpingement starter system where high pressure air was
directly blown through the turbine to turn the engine and they had no
self-start (cart) capability. BTW: if you took say an F-4C to a
Naval or Marine Air Station and used one of their high pressure air
sources for the start, you would shear your starter shaft. I might be
off on a bit of detail since it's been 26 years since I've flown a
Phantom but I thnk that should answer your question.

Thanks for this answer. This is the information I was looking for. I
worked on a F-4F/GAF with was similar to the -E Model. When we did not
place the hose from external starter correct we sometime sheared the
starter shaft off. I have still one at home :-)

Cheers
