In the manual there is no reference (that I know of) to multipurpose
digital I/O thus my options are:
1. Use interfaces such as SPI and I2C as parallel data input (as
they are not used for anything else in this system).
2. Make an intermediate circuit between the ezlcd and switch array
using a parallel to serial converter.
I would very much like to avoid having to make another board so if
anybody has any ideas as to how the first option would work or if
there is another way I have not thought of your input would be much
appreciated.

This would make a total of 5 digital inputs which is just enough for a
push button HMI navigation system.
