What would you sacrifice for the one you love?

In the new episode of TOYA! Episode 1, Part 3 , Prophet and Parasites,
the answer is: everything.

The rules are breaking.
The ground is shifting.
Unseen forces have decided.
Watch before the storm hits.

I teach the Hayti Revolution and have always wondered about the gaps.

We know that Janjak Desalin called Toya his family.
We know she raised him in slavery and she was an Agoji.
We know Toya commanded her own maroon fighting troops during the Haytian Revolution.

We know Desalin served as a soldier in the French army before defecting to the maroon side and for total independence.

What we don’t know about Toya, is everything else.

Her life. Her inner world. Her thoughts, her loves, her dreams, what she longed for?
How did Toya influenced the child she raised to be the Liberator?
How did she survive, at least, 33 years in slavery while raising Hayti’s Founding Father? Who was her support system?

How did a warrior mother, a Mino from Dahomey, who never wore a French epaulet, have a son who became general in the enemy’s army? How was his adopted maroon mother involved with the way Desalin united the divergent Afrikan nations, all the defecting Black soldiers, the maroons and the free Blacks? Who planned that inside job? Who held her up when the world tried to break her?

This drama steps into those gaps.

In Episode 1, Part 3 we meet the Dahomean general who waits for Toya to complete her Agoji service so they can begin a family together. Only to be told by the clairvoyant Queen Mother Hwanjile, the woman who brought Vodun to the Dahomean Kingdom, that she sees a different destiny for both Toya and Rayzar.

General Rayzar is a decorated warrior in the Dahomey army. He wears the king’s Leopard mark, a sign of his high rank and fierce fighting skills. He’s one of King Tegbesu’s favorite generals. He has never failed the kingdom. He has never broken the law.

Yet, when he hears the Queen Mother’s prophecy, Rayzar breaks protocol, breaks the law, before his king and the queen mother. He tells the royals he is bound by honor to protect the Kingdom of Dahomey and has always done so. But Toya is his. He vows to one and all: “No one takes Toya from me. I swear. Neither god, devil nor destiny!”

What is the Queen Mother’s dire prophecy?
What future could force a dutiful, high ranking warrior-general, charged with protecting the laws of the Kingdom, to break it in front of his King and Queen Mother to comfort Toya? What is the Queen Mother’s vision for Toya and Rayzar?
