The mountains crack open. Light erupts. What emerges will change everything for Toya, for Gitòn, for Abundi and the two boys, for Ayiti and the world they’re about to enter.

Below is a free sample for Ep 1, Part 5. It ends as the Light Beings emergence. Paid subscribers get the complete episode, early access to the video excerpts, plus a paid subscriber chat access.

ACT TWO: THE MOUNTAIN’S GAZE - TWO CARGOES ARRIVE AT OKAP

The Catholic Church’s terracotta roof burns in the sun. Its iron cross a recurring sin jutting out at three points.

EXT. OKAP DOCKS – WASHING STATION – CONTINUOUS

Toya rejoins the line, her words still hanging in the air between the captives.

A slaver whips the men in the line next to Toya. She flinches. Another wound, barely scabbed from too many beatings on the ship, splits open. Toya grabs the sting around her throbbing head. Blood streaks her fingers.

GITÒN
You’re okay. Listen to me.
It’s just a memory
trying to claw its way out.
Let me look at you head?

TOYA
Stop talking! My ear is ringing!

Gitòn catches Toya, holding her tight. She stares up at the mountains, then glances down at the scars on Toya’s cheeks which begin to glow.

GITÒN
They’re here now.
Standing on the bones of that pain.

TOYA
My head… it’s tearing open.

The MASIF DI NÒ mountains PULSE, one deep, seismic throb. The dock, the enslaved, the ship — everything blurs, desaturates. Only the mountains remain, sharp and alive.

Then, CRACK.

A sound of shattering stone echoes. High on the peaks, rock splits. LIGHT erupts.

GITÒN
What is that…?

Three colossal LIGHT-BEINGS unfurl from the stone. TWO WOMEN and ONE MAN with transparent, diaphanous glistening obsidian skin, streaked with swirling lava-red and lapis flame, revealing galaxies inside.

The woman to the left wears white dreads braided into waterfalls of starlight, a deep lapis-blue scarf wrapped among the strands. The man on the right wears black braids threaded with starlight, a red bandana tied at his brow. The woman in the center wears loose braids cascading with starlight and supernova colors. All three with eyes of lapis flame.

Behind them, red and thin black pyramids within PYRAMID OF LIGHT in mountain formation. Star-beings floating backward through eternity in changing rivers of time. Endless Ancestral figures woven from starlight.

The THREE LIGHT BEINGS stand. Their gaze sweeps over the bay like a scythe of starlight. Where their eyes pass, the sea boils.

A ghost chorus of rising faint cries, whispers and a million stolen tongues carried on the salt air.

GHOSTLY FORMS of drowned Middle Passage victims rise silently from the water, in a silver mist.

Their spectral chains shatter instantly, dissolving into floating embers. The forms drift, pulled inland toward the mountains’ red and black pyramid center.

The same process repeats in wave after wave, ceaselessly rolling across the harbor. Spectral chains shatter, unshackling waves of arriving Middle Passage victims. And as the liberating light works, the Beings turn their attention from the water to the dock.

TOYA
(points a shaking hand)
Holy hell, Gitòn. Look at them.
They’re giants made of light.
Cracked out of the rock.

GITÒN
Yeah, they’re not from this realm.
The wind cries for those the ocean swallowed.
Those peaks have been waiting on their wake-up call.

TOYA
The ocean keeps the bodies.
The wind brings their spirits home?

A sudden, rough voice cuts through the mountain echo.

MANMAN BRIJIT (O.S.)
Don’t stare, child.

An old manbo, MANMAN BRIJIT, her traditional woven straw-hat shadows her face. She stands behind them, leaning heavily on a cane. Her strange eyes never leave the Light-Beings.

A beat. She doesn’t turn.

MANMAN BRIJIT
(still watching the mountains)
They didn’t just sleep. They were buried.
They were the mountains
before the mountains were mountains.

TOYA
(spinning around, startled)
Who are you? What are you talking about?

ELDER WASHERWOMAN SIX, thin as a rail, lips scarred with jagged lines, eyes Toya. Then, without moving her head, her gaze shifts slowly to the mountains.

WASHERWOMAN SIX
(in a other-worldly Gede nasal voice)
She’s Manman Brijit. Gran Brijit to the young.
Mother of the Gede family.

Even across the ocean, folks tell tales
of Franswa Makandal, the maroon rebel, right?
She’s his wife.

MANMAN BRIJIT wind her waist in a Gede fertility dance movement. The specter from the sea of ghost that landed on the dock, turned to the right direction towards the mountain vortex pulling them in. Manman Brijit’s rhythmic, hip-rolling mimics the undulating ocean and the sexual/spiritual cycle of life.

MANMAN BRIJIT
(taps the ground with her cane)
Before the sky cracked open. Before that rock smacked the sea, they were here. You think this island is just rocks and cane fields? Non. When that asteroid hit, the Chicxulub one, all the griots talk about. It didn’t just kill the dinosaurs. It tore the air. Made a hole in time.

”Look down” - Manman Gitòn tell Toya (Ep 1, Part 5)

[Coming up… the Light Beings emerge. We learn they turned themselves into stone, long ago, to keep the world from falling into what comes next.]
