Just bad guys turn off our service and i am trying to find way of of this.

Currently I change DNS for record api.eye.fi and theoretically we can reproduce server functional for cards of old members.
Anybody know how it may be done?

I've lost my eyefi card about 5 years ago and was just about ready to look for it. There was when I got it a way to have your own server running Linux. Don't know if it worked out or not.

The upload key can be retrieved using the eyefi-config tool by Dave Hansen or looking in the XML config file from the X2 Utility.

One of the things the tool has to do which is "hard" is to make repeated
actual reads to the *real* disk, without the operating system's caching
getting in the way.

A VM adds another level of caching and is likely to break things. Run
it on bare metal to have any chance :)

Hi Dave,

I am not able to get Eyefi-config -k unique code to work on my Linux EyefiServer2.  Did anybody successfully used the unique code on Eyefi-config -k?  What is the code used for?  Is there any way to generate the uploadkey? I found the uploadkey to MAC address is not one to one, so it is hard the find the unique code for a card...  I am sure a lot of people needed help on this.

Hello, Sau!

I have 3 cards and have no keys from them too. For me it's just flash card, solution not found.
I will never use cards with cloud service anymore!

Hi, Maxim,

:-(   I have over six hundreds of these cards...  I have a big project using these cards, got enough to make sure they are not out of production...  Bad move!

Should have register them before...

Hello, Sau!

I believe that with Your quantity is possible to try communicate with vendor for looking solution.
And i sure that is possible to convince vendor to pass powered-off service to community for keeping service online.

I brought these second hand in ebay from different sources,  I can try, but I am afraid they would not listen.

Does not matter how you obtain it. It not 1-2-3 pcs, you pay to vendor (via second hand)  for 600pcs and as any customer can ask vendor. It will be fair to response to you.
Just try. And if will need help - ask us. Each man here can try to do something from self point of view.

Exactly. You can probably use USB passthrough and it might work, but
anything using the host's block layer is probably not going to work.

eyefi-config -k does not return the upload key. You *need* the upload
key to get the third-party software to work.

It runs on lots of versions of Linux. And, yeah, if you want to give me
ssh access to something, I'm happy to log in and take a look to see if I
can help.

Hello, Dave!

Does it's mean that with eyefi-config it's not possible to obtain key?
If not possible, may be modification (hacking) firmware of card is possible? Bruteforce? Programming with external programmer? (I2C, etc)

I don't know where the key comes from, honestly. So, it's surely
possible to *get* it, but I have no idea how.

Hi Dave,

Does eyefi-configure access the firmware directly or does it read the files RSPM/RSPC/REQM/REQC stored on the filesystem? Would it be possible to do a pattern match of a known Upload key to determine the coordinates either in the firmware or those files? If we can figure out a way, it should help thousands of cards that don't have an upload key.

Thanks,

I have been doing some research on getting the Uploadkey, here is what I founded so far:

https://www.os3.nl/_media/2013-2014/courses/ot/connor_stavros.pdf that able to crack the activation key of the mobi card.   Mobi card which is a later product of eye-fi than the X2 line, so I think the X2 uploadkey should be along the same line and less complicated.   The formula which come from the MAC address alone may be with salt, and likely use only last 6 characters of the MAC address only.

https://www.onlinehashcrack.com/hash-identification.php there are many possible hash type, but I think it is just likely MD5 plus salt.

POPULAR ALGORITHMS

  • MD5 - MD5 is the most widely known hashing function. It produces a 16-byte hash value, usually expressed as a 32 digit headecimal number. Recently a few vulnerabilities have been discovered in MD5, and rainbow tables have been published which allow people to reverse MD5 hashes made without good salts.

This may be the reason why Eye-fi said X2 Card are not secure...

Thanks for the advice,  Jeff worked on the Cypto part of the eyefi-config? I guess it must has been sensative back then when Eye-fi's cloud still in operation. The problem was more a political one more than technical one?

I am stucked with 600+ cards, and my business depend on it... There is already much time and money invested besides the money spent on the cards...  And I am sure there are many other pepole who livlyhood is depend on this.  There still thousands of cards out there that people invested time and money work on a solution based on X2 cards...

Hello, Sau, Dave!

Sau: Can You try find local engineer who can try to fetch firmware from flash and crack it?
And second - we can upload cracked firmware to our cards where key will be well-known or just zeroed.

Dave: If i clear understand, we can update firmware without key, right? If yes, we can try to put "custom" firmware and working with card as with native microprocessor like ARM/Atmega/etc, right?
But we need chance to hardware debugging first (reverse engineering) and when working custom firmware will be ready - update firmwares via tool.

My guess would be that uploadkey is created based on the MAC address dynamicly, if we can change it to just a static number, security would suffer, no? I think the firmware itself should also likely be encrypted and based on hardware as well.

I think cracking it with MD5 with salt would likely be easier. I notice there r two messages been deleted. Pls send mail to me regarding cracking the uploadkey if you reply got deleted.

The firmware is signed somehow. You can't just hand it a new image.

Hi,

I saw somebody posted Hashes for help, some can reply with the content... MD5 can de decrpted somehow, if we can get somebody to decrypt it and see the content plus salt, we can generate the Uploadkey.

The two major changes are the certification calculation and the transfer mode.

It turns out that a different forumula is used to authenticate the client to the server. It's md5(mac addr, upload key, snonce) rather than the md5(mac address, cnonce, upload key) used in the other direction. Seems strange to me; Not sure this isn't a bug in the Eye-Fi code.

The other one is reflecting back the transfermode and transfermodetimestamp used in the session setup. Without this, the Eye-Fi refused to transfer more than one picture in a session.

Some minor changes include the server doing a fork for each client connect, and an unsuccessful attempt to verify that file checksum. The eye-fi card passes an MD5 sum along with the file on each upload, but it isn't a straight md5 of the tar file, nor of the embedded JPG file. I had a very quick poke, but the calculation wasn't immediately obvious to me so I wrote it off as a 'nice to have'.

Changed file can be found here. The upload key that's required in the file is stored in Settings.xml if you've used the windows app manager to configure the card. (Which I did: I failed to get it to do anything useful when run under wine).

So now I have it all working on my linux fileserver; When the camera comes into range and it's turned on, photos are automagically dropped into a spool directory, and a little daemon renames them into timestamped directories. So now I'm happy. Yay. :)

Ps: I would really have liked to get working the eyefi-config tools that Dave Hansen wrote but I simply couldn't get them to do anything beyond detect that there was a card in the USB adaptor. It appears that the protocol between the manager and the card has changed enough that the tools no longer work.

I had a quick bash trying to get the manager to run under wine so I could spy on the protocol, but after more than an hour of fighting wine the end wasn't in sight, so I moved onto other things.

Hi, Dave,

There is a newer version which allow starting of the direct mode mentioned on your blog, you did not release it because it brick your card,  can you let us have that version of eyefi-config?  About the unique code, is it writable?  can we change it somehow?

Dave,

Cracked the upload key. It is small 'o' command 0xfd. I am not a coder. Can you please
add a -u option signifying upload key to your wonderful wonderful eyefi-config script

Can't thank you enough for all the work.

Dave,

I built a perl loop around your code using one of your UNKNOWN_ states,
went from 0 to 0xFF. I have tested it over a sample space of 1 (my own
card:-). Please test it on yours if you have one. Like I said I am not a coder,
my background is semiconductors. I don't know anything about the process
to update the repository and other things. Hence, please update your script
from your end.

Thanks a bunch,

BTW, I have to add that mine is a card that is stuck in Direct mode. I am
positive but not 100% sure that 0xfd will work on other cards not in Direct
mode.

Also, I came to figure out that 0x22 gives out the Direct mode SSID  and
0x23 gives out the Direct mode WPA password. You may want to add that too
if these are reproducible across other cards.

Hi,

I will return to Shanghai late tonight. Will compare some known cards tonight.

I had copied to some cards with same folders, which mean the file system is exactly the same, but the unique key is still unique. And the MAC address also the unique. The Wi-Fi ssid is also stored the correct info... The file system has been updated somehow.

Sau Chi,

Dave's script (when updated) will run a command that will fetch the upload key and store it in
the RSPC file. Unless you run the command, RSPC will not have either the upload key or
the Wi-Fi SSID. Stored data will not contain the upload key. You will need to run Dave's
script on each of your cards.

Hi,

Came in Shanghai, and here is what I found:

From my known cards, tested about 20 of them. -u seen to give out uploadkey that perfectly match with my known keys.

From my used cards, when use -u function, about 2/3 show ‘’ blank uploadkey. And 1/3 show a uploadkey.

From my brand new cards, none of them show any uploadkey.

I checked their firmware version, all card that show an uploadkey with -u had a version number of 5.2, the rest of other version 5.0;4.5 all doesn’t show any uploadkey. I tried the -k function, it is still showing a 32 characters. I will see tomorrow if the lower version -l unique key works on the server, but I do not have high hope...

I would think they use different address for different version, they use a different port too when they send files...

Hi Dave,

Here r the logs files.

Since all my known cards I have, has updated to the latest firmware, so basically failed cards are all version 5.0, 4.5 firmware.

I have not encounter a version 5.2 which -u function show a ''.

Has the unique key (-k) been working before?

Has Eyefiserver been using other ports so that server can work with older cards?

Hi Makeshwar,

As long as it is under the same network, and MAC address is in the server configuration file, it will start communicate, no need to use package sniffing.

Tested the -u feature.  It will show uploadkey of updated cards with version 5.2 cards.  The cards that are not updated are not showing.

Can you tell me how to scan other address for content that may match uploadkey with older cards? Most of the card I have are not 5.2...  They are version 3.0, 4.5, 5.0...

Hi Sau Chi,

For some reason my posts are getting deleted. Let's see if this one makes it this time.

When you run the -l option through eyefi-config (eyefi-config -l > filename), it dumps
out the log messages. With my eye-fi card, I see that it reports a credential mismatch.
It says the credential string it was expecting from the server was this and what it
received was something else. Given that the credential string from the server is the
MD5 of the concatenation of the mac address, cnonce and the upload key, I am wondering
if there is a way to reverse engineer the key. The cnonce that the card sends out can
be sniffed out using Wireshark. So essentially we will have a situation where:

Hash in the log file = MD5 ( cat (mac address, cnonce, upload key))

Here mac address is known, cnonce is obtained using packet sniffing.
We can generate multiple values of this hash from multiple values of cnonce.

I am just wondering if there is anyway we can figure out the upload key from the
above equation. May be not. Just a thought.

What command?  does it run in the background already?
How can I open and browse the RSPC file?
It would be best if I can browse the file to see if there is Uploadkey stored somewhere in other firmware version.
P.S. Send me private message if it got deleted.

Dear All,

Let me do a update in case somebody is looking for uploadkey and want to continue of what we done here.

If your card is updated firmware to version 5.2, You can download Dave Hansen's version eyefi-config-013 https://github.com/hansendc/eyefi-config and use the eyefi-config -u function.  Thanks to Makesh for his work to come up with the way to get the Uploadkey for version 5.2. And thank Dave for adding the feature in the eyefi-config. Dave, please add -a for the 8 characters code which the x2 utility setting.xml file required. -S too for starting the direct mode.

If your card has not been updated,   Version 3.0, version 4.5, version 5.0 will show "" (blank) when use -u function. We are still working on it.

We still do not know what the -k function of the eyefi-config is for, if you has been successful on using the -k unique code with older firmware version on an older linux eyefiserver - please leave a message here and list the firmware and server version.

I have tried Eyefiserver with blank uploadkey, 32 zero and -k unique code to replace the unique code for the older firmware version.  If you are about to try, don't waste your time.

The following are some attachments which I think It would be useful for solving the problem:

A:  Perl program which Makesh wrote for locating the Uploadkey from the firmware.  To use it change eyefi-config.h

UPLOAD_KEY    = 0xfd, //

to

UPLOAD_KEY    = 253, //

and Change the path to the perl executable if necessary (1st line)

run the command perl loo_command.pl

B:  Output of Makesh program with different version of Eyefi firmware.

Eye-fi Patent:

The steps for setting up and operating the authentication mechanism built into a media card configured in accordance with embodiments of the present invention are as follows (refer to Figure 5):

1) Before a media card is provided to a user, an authentication key (KA ) made up of random bits with sufficient cryptographic entropy is selected This key is stored in a region of the flash memory that is never accessible to users (e.g., the same area that holds the firmware). A copy of the key is retained in an authentication database and associated with the serial number of the corresponding media card (the serial number may also be present in the device's firmware in an unrestricted readable region).
2) During normal operation, the media card controller and firmware remain in the "locked" mode, replacing the pictures taken by users with screen-resolution thumbnails and securing the full-resolution originals as described above.
3) When a media card is returned to an authorized processing location, the processing software initiates the authentication operation by contacting an authentication server (e.g., hosting the authentication database) with a session initiation message and receives an encryption salt (SSRVR) dynamically derived from a linear-feedback shift register (LFSR) counter and the time of day. The server associates this salt with the established connection and remembers it for the rest of the exchange. The dynamic nature of this salt eliminates the possibility of replay attacks if the unlocking station is compromised or is running malicious software.
4) The processing station then presents the salt received from the server to the media card being unlocked. The device responds by providing a strong cryptographic hash (such as MD5) computed over the secret authentication key (KA), the serial number of the device (NSERlAL) and the server salt (SSRVR). The computed hash and serial number are transmitted to the server.
5) The server uses the serial number to look up its copy of the media card's secret key in the authentication database. Using that key, the serial number provided by the unlocking station and the server salt associated with this connection (remembered from step 3), the server computes the cryptographic hash using the same algorithm employed by the media card in step 4. If the hash computed by the server is identical to the one received from the unlocking station, the authentication succeeds and the legitimacy of the media card can be trusted. If the hash comparison fails, the server indicates an authentication failure and terminates the connection
6) At this point the authentication server can trust that a valid media card is present at the other end of the connection (and not, for example, an arbitrary software automaton that may be trying to gain access to the database and mine it for-information), but the authenticity of the server is not yet proven to the media card. The device provides its own dynamically-generated salt (SCARD) which is transmitted to the server by the unlocking station software. The server applies the same cryptographic hash function that was employed in steps 4 and 5 to compute a signature using the secret key, the serial number and the salt provided by the device. This signature is offered back to the media card, which computes its own copy of the hash using its knowledge of the KA, NSERIAL and SCARD. If the computed hash matches the one received from the server, the authenticity of the server is proven because the hash can only be computed correctly with knowledge of the authentication key KA.
7) With the successful completion of step 6, the media card and the server are assured of their mutual authenticity. Furthermore, no trust is placed in the processing station which is acting as an intermediary during the transaction because the data transmitted therethrough is comprised of strong cryptographic hashes that are dependent on a shared secret (KA) between the server and the device, but make it impossible (or computationally very expensive) to derive the secret knowing the resultant hashes and the other two constituents of the hash operations due to the irreversibility. At this point the server picks an encryption key (KE), which can be a dynamically-generated one-time key or another pre-computed key that was stored in the database, encrypts it using KA and a cryptographic algorithm such as 3DES and transmits it to the unlocking station. The unlocking station provides this encrypted key to the media card, which decrypts it using KA and retrieves the unencrypted key KE which is used for the remainder of the bulk-data transfers off of the card.
8) With the successful arrival of the bulk-data encryption key the media card enters its "unlocked" state, whereby the FAT file-system presented by the device makes available the full length of the data stored in the files representing the full-resolution photos taken by the user. However, when the operating system running on the unlocking station reads the blocks in the flash memory that correspond to the FAT data blocks for the files, each block of data is returned to the host via the physical interface (Compact Flash (CF), Secure Digital (SD), etc.) after being encrypted by the bulk-data key KE. The encrypted data is not usable by the processing station because KE is not known to it.
9) If the processing station is associated with an authorized photo-finishing vendor (such as a retail outlet, a wholesale printing service) whose identity can established to a sufficient degree of certainty based on its network address and an identity certificate (such as those employed by SSL), the authentication server can share the bulk-data key KE with the processing station to allow it to decrypt the data retrieved from the media card and make immediate use of the images.
10) If the processing station is not such a vendor (e.g., if it is a user PC), then the unlocking is more restricted. In this case the data retrieved from the media card is sent in its encrypted form to the authentication server, where it is decrypted and uploaded to the provider associated with the serial number of the media card (e.g., as retrieved from the authentication database).
11) Alternatively, the media card can offer both user PC and authorized processing station hosts the ability to directly receive and decrypt individual pictures. In this mode, the processing station sends a request for a specific picture (based on, for example, its filename) to the media card. The media card dynamically generates an encryption key (Kp) for the picture and associates it permanently with that picture by storing in a non-host-accessible portion of the flash memory so that it may be reused for subsequent decryptions. It then encrypts the picture key with the authentication key KA and returns the encrypted results to the processing station. The processing station then contacts the authentication server and makes the request to decode the specific picture and passes along the encrypted picture key. If the authentication server decides that the processing station is authorized to decrypt this individual picture and get access to its full-resolution copy, based either on a pre-determined trust or authorization, or a just in time authorization operation (such as credit card billing), it decrypts the received picture key with KA and returns it to the processing station, which can then use the plain-text key to decrypt the contents of that individual picture as it is read off the media card.

Well I am in the same boat.

Has anyone tried cloning the sd card with a working card, would that update the firmware? I know there are a few programs that clone encrypted sd cards. Just a thought.

It looks like if firmware is 5.2  there is a workaround

I was going to try to buy some cheap ones off ebay to test with and see what I can contribute, but don't want to waste any more money if someone knows for sure that won't work.

Hi

Thanks, I am going to try it as well as another sd card firmware hack I found. I guess with the holidays prices shot up on ebay and amazon. I am certain once more people find out these don't work prices will come down. I will update here if I have any luck.

Thanks
Tim

I will run the perl script on 2 cards with older firmware in a few hours. I'll post the results.

Makes, I am looking at doing the same for my < 5.2 firmware cards.

How exactly does one run the loop ? The perl script is in a post from Sauchi and i can use it  as he described. Probing and /recompiling for each entry from 1 to 255.

Is that how it's supposed to work ?

How did you get the address for the "o" ?

I have several cards with fw 5.0 that i'd like to get the upload key from.

Hi, if u have card with firmware 5.12 and want the uploadkey just run the eyefi-config 013. If u want to help to get uploadkey for other versions you have to ask Dave if he can supply us with a version we can work on and that has the big “O” command. I think I tried all possibilities with the current small “o”. Well that I was told... have no idea what that means... just know I can’t go further without Dave’s help.

I brought mine from this guy, I do not mind giving u some to test, but shipping cost more than the card...my cards r in Shanghai.

I tested the script with version 5.0. It does not work...need to search another range of addresses with the big “O” command which current eyefi-config 013 doesn’t support.

Why?

The latest version has real arguments to query upload keys. Just hand
it a "-u".

What am I missing?

The 013 does return the uplaod key via -u for cards with fw = 5.2 however for fw < 5.2, it does not.

Most likely because the upload key is at a different address than the one in 5.2.

In my case, running the perl loop hangs at the second command and does not log anything after.

But Sauchi has several examples of full logs from the perl loop, for different versions of firmware.

I guess we have to probe with a different range, while using the perl loop, because from 1 to 255, it does not return the upload key.

The current eyefi-config 013 works for version 5.2 only. Not the earlier versions. The other version output r blank. Makesh said need to search big “O” range of address which he doesn’t know how. So the 013 -u is not a full solution.

Hi!

Just use a small package and cost will be very-very low. About $5 or less. Registered mail.

Have you tried running the perl loop for a bigger range ?

as in go higher than 255 ?

Edit the code

and under while ($i<=255) change it to something else, greater, like while ($i<=355)

See what the output is there (i have 0 clue if this will probe beyond the internal address range of the card).

For some reason the different environments I run the loop in, it never goes past the 2-nd command.

Tried it under Ubuntu and Knoppix. I get some C compilation errors.

'i' gets stored in a single byte in the card commands. Putting anything

In case of i=355 better use 512 =)))
but i not shure about support 2-bytes command...

As with fw 5.2, the upload key must be calculated and provided on query somewhere and somehow.

Obviously at a different address and call.

One has to run a query on all possible replies from the card.

I think that the card might not spit everything out before kicking the bucket.

Is there a way to probe for "everything" ?

How to get it to search other range of address? With big “O”? How? Is -O13 support that? Thanks.

Hi,

Makesh said Version 5.2 show uploadkey with this small “o” range of address, other version may be under another range of address, is it possible to search other range?

Anyways, the other fw version’s uploadkey must have store in the fw somewhere other than the range that we scan, how can we scan the other address?

I bought some cards from the same guy, But they all appear blank on my computer. There is no "EyeFi" folder. They all have MBR partition table and FAT32 partition. Is there some trick to get the firmware to present itself?

By the way, I got eyefi-config working on OSX if anyone needs that. https://github.com/btb/eyefi-config

Ah, perfect. I should have tried that! Of the four I bought, three are now working fine, more or less, one doesn't seem to do anything (responses are all zeroes)

How did the original Eye-Fi software handle it when the special files were missing? Probably looked at the vendor ID/Product name and then created the files?
System profiler on my mac reports:
Product Name: EFEYEFI
Manufacturer ID: 0x6d

Thanks

The three that r okay, r they firmware version 5.2? and the one that is not working is other version? The response should be blank if u try to get the key.

The set up for the original program was done with a server-side application which is down for good. Likely the key is generated from the server and store in sd card firmware.  Right now we only manage to get the key with firmware 5.2.

I had to recreate them a time or two. There is a create_control_files()
function in my tool, although it's possible that it isn't working for
your card.

You can also do it with mkdir and dd. This will probably work from the
command-line, too if you are cd'd into the card's directory:

mkdir EyeFi
for f in RSPM RSPC REQM REQC; do
dd if=/dev/zero of=EyeFi/$f bs=16384 count=1
done

I have 2 cards. One is in desktop mode (0x022) and the other is in online and desktop mode (0x8222) with geo-tagging  and hot-spots enabled. The one that is in desktop mode (0x022) works with linux eyefi-server. Connects to it and uploads pictures. The other doesn't connect.

[00:00] Eye-Fi firmware 5.2010 Aug 27 2013 18:12:44 started (1), hardware revision 1, CID "DD2G4M:30:09", 3886/32 MB, 00-18-56-XX-XX-XX, 0x01
[00:02] Marvell 8786 firmware version 12.57.6.p54 running, xtal offset 26/26.
[00:02] Card is in desktop (0x022) transfer mode (timestamp 1441654652), geo-tagging is disabled, hotspots are disabled.
[00:02] Using sync mode AUTO.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^
this one works

The card below doesn't connect:

I can use Dave's utility to get the upload key for both cards. I have wifi configured for them both. Tries configuring in eyefi-config and through eye-fi X2 utility, so I believe the issue is related to the transfer mode. Transfer mode option in eyefi-config only offers the following settings: AUTO, SELSHARE, SELUPLOAD. So I am trying to find a way to setup the card in desktop only transfer mode (0x022), turn off geo-tagging and hotspots. Please share your thoughts. Below is complete log from the card that I can't get to connect to my eyefi-server.

Played around with changing --transfer-mode in eyefi-config and it actually changes sync mode in the logs, AUTO, SELUPLOAD or SELSHARE. Transfer mode stays the same.

Sorry to reanimate the thread, but I have a card with firmware 3.0301 and no upload key to be found.
Was this ever solved?
I can pay someone to solve it if that's helpful.
Thanks!
