There is a way to stop pumping oil and not kill half the population from starvation. It starts with making syngas out of municipal solid waste and solar or other renewable power. The method is to heat a pool of iron with induction at the bottom of a 35-meter shaft gasifier to 1500 deg and pump superheated steam into the interface. The carbon in the waste forms CO and hydrogen, which can be converted to diesel. These are well-understood industrial processes. Once we have run short on MSW, we harvest biomass. Enough of it grows every year to completely satisfy current oil use.

The problem at the moment is that investment in infrastructure of this type is out of favor with investors who want quick returns on AI projects.

It is a huge project; dealing with the MSW of LA would take around 30 gasifiers of the size above, and cost perhaps 10 billion dollars. On the other hand, LA could divert the MSW away from landfills. Landfills have serious drawbacks; there is one on fire about 15 miles from where I live.

If anyone can think of a person to lead such a project as CEO, and has a contact with them, let me know. The AIs have suggested several people, but none of them have responded.

[from PJW: you may remember how many of us under the MP, urged creation of an office under the security council, with divisions for each of the four big existential threats we discussed. Climate  extinction was one of them. I would of course wish for a more completely open transparent LLM focused on the issue of climate extinction, and would be happy to help create a mirror of DeepSeek Climate able to answer questions and do related data analysis for all nations of earth. Accessing the crucial databases and combining them to build integrated cross-cutting analysis should be more thanjust a part time activity of a retired many approaching 80!]

No government on earth is doing what would be needed to choose the Paris scenario in reality (promoses). The technology exists; we had an ieee study showing ways how, making net profit even. But no one is doing it or even starting in a serious way  . My excuse is the other existential threats like nuclear war kinds of stuff moving faster
