Dear Dreams For Kids DC Volunteers,
“Spending the afternoon with Zachary and his mom was wonderful. Zachary insisted that I didn’t slow down on the ice. In preparation for our reunion next year, I will need to enhance my off-the-ice conditioning. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to volunteer with an organization that brings such joy to these young athletes.”
- Kevin Chesley, 2014 Extreme Recess Ice Hockey volunteer
As the year comes to a close, it is important to reflect on the past and hope for the future. Take a moment to recall your favorite memory while volunteering at a DFKDC Extreme Recess clinic.
Thanks to your generosity of time and spirit, in
2014, Dreams For Kids DC touched the lives of over 389 children with physical
and developmental disabilities through participation in 11 free Extreme Recess
events. Without your help, this would
not be possible. 2014 Highlights
include:
Extreme Recess Ice Hockey – With support from our partners, the Washington Capitals, 87 children and 99 volunteers participated in an exciting day of adaptive ice hockey, ice skating, ice sledding and coaching from Capitals players.
Extreme Recess Football – Thanks to the three-year partnership with Tyler’s Kids Outreach and Washington Redskin Tyler Polumbus, 92 children and 113 volunteers filled the Redskin practice field to toss the pigskin and kick field goals.
Extreme Recess Baseball – In partnership with the Baltimore Orioles and American University Club Baseball team, DFKDC held the first baseball clinic for 38 participants and 45 volunteers.
None of these successes would be possible without you. Volunteers are central to DFKDC, providing a 1:1 volunteer to participant ratio at every Extreme Recess event. This personal attention allows for a unique experience to be tailored to each child, and builds a special relationship between the volunteer and participant from one event to the next.
“I just wanted to thank you and your amazing team of volunteers for the love and friendship they have shared with my daughter Isabel and her sister, Juliet, over the last several years. Isabel developed a particularly special relationship with one of your active volunteers, Bridget… at the horse riding event she kept Isabel smiling throughout the day… also at the Redskins football camp whether tossing a football with Kirk Cousins or running through the victory tunnel.”
- Charles Franklin, father of Isabel (October 2013)
Looking forward to 2015, Dreams For Kids DC plans to provide the same exciting Extreme Recess activities, as well as create new clinics, including the first DFKDC Prom. Your support will continue to help children with developmental and physical disabilities to build self-confidence and realize that their disability will not prevent them from fulfilling their dreams.
DFKDC is only able to provide these free life-changing opportunities to families and children with disabilities through the generosity of our volunteers and supporters. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to DFKDC during this holiday season to ensure that we can continue to offer adaptive programs to all of those children who need it. The cost for one child to attend one Extreme Recess clinic is just $25. Please see the enclosed Wish List for other giving ideas.
Don’t forget to sign up for the Dreams For Kids DC bi-weekly newsletter for opportunities to volunteer at Extreme Recess clinics and more incredible stories. Thanks again for your support.
Warm wishes for a healthy and happy new year,
