The Leadership Video Screening and music by the Love Loves on the Empty Vessel
Originally curated for the Leadership Forum at Silver Bay, the longest
running management conference (now in its 88th year) in the US, this
collection of short videos provides a space for inquiry into the
concept of leadership. The screening is a starting point for a
dialogue between the arts and business communities. The selected works
demonstrate leadership through form and content: they take action, say
something, call into question basic assumptions, focusing attention
and push perceived boundaries. Includes work from The Yes Men,
Creative Commons, animation, straight documentaries, interventionist
documentaries, youth media, and internal corporate media.

XXXXX SATURDAY, JULY 22 XXXXX
Metropolis in Motion: Dance for Your Rights
Join us near Mayor Bloomberg's house in a mass outdoor participatory
dance event. New York, it's time to dance for your rights. This
open-air dance and participatory movement event will bring attention
to the antiquated and restrictive New York City cabaret laws.
You: artists, ravers, i-bankers, cheerleaders, lawyers, doctors,
hip-hoppers, street performers, ballroom, swing, Irish folk and
African dancers, jazz aficionados, waiters, actors, janitors, punk
rockers, politicians, and a slew of your fellow New Yorkers. Wear your
dancing/performance clothes, shoes, etc.
In 1926, New York City sought to limit interaction among the races and
control "public lewdness" by clamping down on the jazz scenes found in
Harlem and West 52nd Street (and later in the bohemian Greenwich
Village). To that end the city established Cabaret Laws that limited
dancing to specially licensed public spaces serving food or drink
where three or more persons congregated, and stipulated that only
musicians "of good character" could be licensed to play. Over the
years, musicians won the right to forgo licensing, but laws regulating
dancing remain on the books. As part of his "Quality of Life"
campaign, Mayor Rudolph Guiliani used the laws to crack down on bars
and clubs without a license that allowed people to dance. Venues were
fined, or worse, padlocked and closed forever. The laws continue to be
enforced under Mayor Bloomberg, while his Administration gives lip
service to repeal or reform. According to the Department of Consumer
Affairs, there are currently only 244 actively legal places to dance
in New York City, including strip joints and clubs. Why are these laws
still on the books? Some people say it's to enforce a vague notion of
the "quality of life." Other people know it's to keep property values
high, club owners with cabaret licenses rich, and ordinary people,
otherwise known as the citizens of New York, "in line." And we don't
mean a kick line. For more information, you can hear from our much
respected predecessors in this fight. Check out the website at the end
of this listing.

The Madagascar Institute presents:
Dueling Re-Enactments
Presenting the wide and varied, and often complicated history of
Washington Square Park in easy to follow, bite-sized nuggets. A cast
of two dozen, marginally trained re-enactors, outfitted in period
attire that is close enough to accurate, will travel throughout the
park making history come alive.
The broad range of Washington Square Park's history will be covered,
including the pirate execution ground at the Hanging Tree, the
Surrealist declaration of an independent republic in 1917, filthy,
lazy 1950s Beatniks reciting poetry, the 1906 assassination of
Stanford White, the marauding Dead Rabbit gang of the Gilded Age, and
high school students from New Jersey drinking beer and getting sold
fake pot in the summer of 1990.
Over the course of the event the re-enactors will move closer and
closer together, until they are infringing on one another's space and
confusing the crowd as to what, if any, is the true history of the
park. Luckily, history is written by the victors, so the issue will be
settled by a maelstrom of violence: skateboarder against Victorian
gentry, Beatnik against bridge-and-tunnel teen, Surrealist against
Dead Rabbit, hangman against pirate, a flurry of baguettes,
skateboards, light sabers, and water balloons. Triumphant, the true
history of the park will emerge.
We acknowledge no distinction between history that actually happened
and things we just felt like making up.

Refracted Lens: A Woman's Eye View of Music
A woman making music is a beautiful thing, but women making music
videos are all too rare. In light of the industry?s overwhelming male
status, celebrating the accomplishments of women in the field becomes
even more urgent. Refracted Lens turns the spotlight on the women
behind the camera, often in collaboration with their colleagues ?- or
themselves -- squarely in front of it.
The program features music videos by women working all over the map
and across a variety of genres, including: Sadie Benning for
ubiquitous feminist rocker Kathleen Hanna?s solo project, Julie Ruin;
Gina Birch, filmmaker and bassist of the seminal post-punk band the
Raincoats; Birgit Rathsmann (with Bruce Alcock) for Dutch solo female
artist Solex; Julia Feyrer (Canada) for Canuck indie rockers They
Shoot Horses Don?t They; Rosa Barba (Germany/NL), for experimental
electronic artists Mouse on Mars and Microstoria; Valerie Toumayan
(France) for the all-female Vancouver quintet The Organ; Meredith
Danluck (US) for the unclassifiable Japanese electronic artist Mu;
performance/video artists Angie Reed (Germany) and Planningtorock
(UK/Germany); and others.
Capping off the lineup is Deborah Schamoni?s (Germany) 2005 short
film, Visitors, featuring art-rockers extraordinaire and role models
for record label-owning aspirants everywhere, Chicks on Speed,
reimagined as aliens exploring New York City.
Refracted Lens is by no means an exhaustive survey of women music
video makers, but it?s an earnest attempt to capture some of the magic
that happens when a woman and her camera meet some of the most
exciting music around.

Critical Mass, an international event held in more than 325 cities on
six continents, occurs on the last Friday of every month when
bicyclists spontaneously come together to ride the ordinarily
car-clogged streets of their cities. Critical Mass focuses on the
rights of bicyclists and the rights of pedestrians on their own
streets. It also brings attention to the deteriorating quality of life
-- starting with the toxic levels of air and noise pollution -- that
cars create for cities. Critical Mass's aim is to make people take
notice of cyclists as road users. Although some obstruction of normal
traffic occurs, we are only seeking to raise the profile of cycling,
and put cycling and transport issues on the agenda so that they will
not be ignored.

* Dancers and nondancers needed for performance event in Washington
Square Park on August 3. The performance is part of an ongoing series,
Quiet City, created by Veronica Dougherty. Quiet City events are sound
installations broadcast over the radio to headphones that participants
wear. The audience will sit on park benches listening to the
soundtrack through headphones and watch the show unfold. The
performance will be very similar to things you would see sitting on a
park bench watching city life. Someone on roller skates with a sign, a
crazy person yelling at a tree, dancing trash cans, a group of people
looking up at the sky, people walking back and forth, etc. Things will
start out simply and lead up to a very bombastic circus style ending
centered around and in the fountain. We need rollerbladers,
skateboarders, and people who want to dress as trashcans needed;
people with absolutely no talent whatsoever also welcome. We can use
you. Must be able to attend at least four rehearsals between July 19
and August 2. Possible monetary compensation, but don't bet on it.
Instead, I'll cook you dinner and compliment your looks and
intelligence. Contact Violette:

We look for the sort of classes you circled in college course catalogs
but never managed to fit into your schedule. And we also look for the
kind of things that no college could teach. Cheap and eclectic is the
rule, though all rules get broken occasionally, and we especially love
workshops, round-tables, and teachers who won't take your work out of
your hands and show you how to do it right. One- time listings are
categorized, with general recurring classes at the end. We thrive on
your suggestions, so make sure to tell us about upcoming classes that
you think are nifty-keen.

Opposing Anti-Semitism in the Movement: A Workshop for Activists
Antiauthoritarians and social justice activists often think they're
immune from racism and prejudice. But many Jewish activists'
experience shows that forms of antisemitism are alive and well in the
social justice movement. This not only drives away many Jewish
activists, but profoundly affects our work as a movement. This
workshop brings together two longtime activists who have studied how
the left responds to antisemitism for an evening of instruction and
experience-sharing that will help us understand and combat its effects
in the activist community.

XXXXX HELP XXXXX
Ever taken part in an old-fashioned barn raising? We never have, but
we think it would be kind of cool-all those neighbors in funny hats
and overalls coming together to pound nails, stand up walls and raise
the collective roof. In that spirit, we look for one-day volunteer
opportunities with no long-term commitments required. Our goal is to
help groups or individuals that serve the greater good in small but
significant ways, avoiding mega-nonprofits and people just looking for
free labor. Know of any existing opportunities? Looking for ways to
help out? Or need volunteers to get your own community project off the
ground? Send us your requests.
