I found a good Uk based guide on how to handle debt collectors

Main points:
- DO NOT reconise it as being a legal debt
- DO NOT PHONE THEM - make sure all correspondence is via recorded
delivery
- If you do have to phone them then make sure you record the
conversation
- Ask for a signed copy of the agreement
- They have (by 40 days) to comply with this request
