I went to REI today and picked up a menu of the freeze-dried food they have.  The meals range from $4-8 and they have a pretty big variety of different dishes.  Unfortunately they are all very salty.  There is a Buy 12 get 10% off deal, so if a few of us want some, we can combine and save a few bucks.  Most of the meals need boiling water, so we need your jetboil, Hank, if it is raining.

They also have a bunch of water purifiers and i was recommended by a few different people to get the UV wand that kills bacteria and viruses and is still pretty light.  Iodine works fine too, but it kills the good bacteria too, takes a long time and tastes nasty.  There are a few things we should all pitch for or if someone wants to keep it for after the trip, they can just buy it.

Just sayin.

Too funny, I also went to REI yesterday and picked up the menu of FDF. Also noted that they were too salty. The packages were for 2 servings so considering 6 of us we would need 3 packages per night at $8 each... I think we should pick up some and try them at home first over a stove, fire or jetboil. Let's also through some other ideas out there (for other meals as well).

Ken

I would not look at the nbr of servings but @ the calories they provide. 1 per person is probably recommended.

Sandrine,

Agreed. The REI menus have a bunch of info regarding calories, fat, sodium etc. They also have a planner on the back that can help calculate are total caloric need. Probably worth looking at. I'll bring it along on Wed, Thur or Friday ( see my other email).

Ken et al,

The packages are for two servings, but after a grueling day, believe me you will be able to eat the entire package.   We also like to bring instant rice to add to the meals, (they already have a lot of flavor), for extra bulk and energy.  So a freeze dried package per day for each person, excepting me who will bring my own provisions.

We are usually quite content drinking treated water and don't consider a water purifier to be essential.

Other idea about food: tuna and salmon pockets (as opposed to cans) are a very compact and light way to transport protein.

I've recently been using this stuff that I found at a home show here in Nashville -- I just buy in bulk and then just repackage for whatever my needs are -- long trip, short trip, trailmixes, etc. They also have some MRE's and basic survival gear. I haven't price compared on the gear, but it's not really anything that I need.
