Depending on the complexity of the building, they are likely to include a number of different projections, such as plans, sections and elevations, and the complete information may be spread across several different drawings. They may also be referred to as 'location drawings' as they show the location of various components and assemblies within the overall design, but this can be confused with location drawings indicating the geographical location of the building.


General arrangement drawings are likely to be prepared at each stage of development of a design, showing the overall relationship between the main elements and the key dimensions. The level of detail will increase as the project progresses and they may need to be supplemented by more detailed drawings, showing specific elements and assemblies. On very simple projects these may be included on the general arrangement drawings themselves, but generally, separate drawings will be required. They can be very large drawings depending on the size and complexity of the obeject being represented and the scale used.


General arrangement drawings may include references to additional information, such as specifications and detail drawings, however they should not duplicate information included elsewhere as this can become contradictory and may cause confusion.


They may include notation, symbols, hatching and so on to indicate additional detail about particular elements. The scale at which drawings are prepared should reflect the level of detail of the information they are required to convey. Different line thicknesses can also be used to provide greater clarity for certain elements. For more information see: Scale in the construction industry.


General arrangement drawings may be drawn by hand, or prepared using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. However, increasingly, building information modelling (BIM) is being used to create 3 dimensional representations of buildings and their components. General arrangement drawings can then be generated from the BIM model to the required scale.

RE: GA Drawings 1969grad (Mechanical)10 Jan 04 18:14To me, general arrangement drawings show the overall outside dimensions of an assembly of items. For example, a skid-mounted assembly like a compressor unit or a pump and motor mounted on a baseplate.



On the other hand, general assembly drawings show the internals of the item like a compressor and includes the manufacturers part numbers.

- General Arrangement drawings are used mainly in Project / Process Engineering, to show, and locate equipment respect to the co-ordinate system within the plant or field, showing only those dimensions, datum, elevations to refer each equipment to other equipment or structures. Is common practice to indicate (in plan wiew) a short description (type, capacity, power,...). A valve is referred into the pipeline showing it basic specifications( diameter/type/standard), distance from pump, height from floor, and special connection specifications. This valve will be identified by a TAG number or code.





- General Assembly drawings, show the equipment referred to itself, and is used mainly for location, anchoring, connections, maintenance. In some complex equipment there may have several disciplines or sub-assemblies (electrical, control, pneumatic...)General Assembly drawings are more usual in Design Engineering, ad usually are provided from equipmet manufacturers. General Assembly drawings uses the PART NUMBER.

General arrangement drawing (GA drawing) of the steel frame is a document with graphical representation that helps to understand the general arrangement of the steel frame elements in the project. The general arrangement drawings are developed at the earliest design stages.


The aim of the general arrangement drawings is to help a official static engineer, customer or contractor to get an overview of a steel frame, bearing capacity and stability, interaction of the elements, technical solutions, connections of separate elements in structure of the building and to check if everything is correct.


Eneca team includes experienced structural engineers, calculation specialists and steel structure designers. We design steel structures for different types of facilities, such as commercial buildings, industrial plants, boiler houses and CHPs, in accordance with Eurocodes.


A GA Drawing stands for General Arrangement Drawing; it is used to communicate the important overall relationship between the main elements of the tank and key dimensions. This drawing acts as a gateway between the designer, in this case, Fuelchief and the customer.


Attached is an example of a GA Drawing with key parts of information highlighted. This drawing will hold all the necessary critical information required by the customer, civil works, installers, carriers, engineers, test certifiers and maintenance.


At Fuelchief these drawings allow us to track revisions made to the tank for each specific job and acts as a sign-off document for how the finished tank is to be configured for the customer, so both parties are clear on expectations. Below is how this is achieved.


Customer talks to fitters, installers, engineers and necessary parties. From here, the detailed requirements are marked up on the GA drawing; this can be any changes to size, shape, fittings, or accessories of the tank, it can also include any additional information. This initial process can take a few revisions depending on how many parties are involved. The revisions are stated on the bottom left side of the GA Drawing as shown in the picture.


The signed GA Drawing is then issued to the Fuelchief design department and meetings between purchasing and production are had to schedule the job.

From sign-off and deposit paid, the general time frame is 8-10 weeks for a welded tank*
