If you have never used parental controls, or started using them after updated features became available, then there is no need to change. You can start using parental controls on any of your Netflix profiles.

I have now no way to turn parental controls off - I have to go through the OpenDNS site. This is a major inconvenience, as it was very useful to be able to just turn the Internet on for 5 minutes even during a configured 'down' timeslot.

On a related note....I tried to factory reset the AC750 router to get rid of the parental controls alltogether - after 10 minutes the amber light is still blinking...I thought that factory reset (holding the button on the back for 5 seconds) should initiate a reboot ?

As the LPC control is not available on the Nighthawk App (one of many shortcomings on the Nighthawk App), you have to head to the desktop (Windows or macOS) Genie versions. Head to and scroll down for the downloads.

Netgear has dropped the ball here. If you have an Android device, you'll want to install the 3.1.74 version of the Genie app to retain the ability to configure connected devices using Access Control based on OpenDNS parental controls.

A little bit off-topic - Netgear does fail again to make things clear. Why on earth don't they use the term "Circle" or "Circle by Disney" also on the App? No, they replace it (apparently) by a tile named "Parental Control" and confuse both the Live Parental Control (OpenDNS based) as in place on many Netgear routers.

Back to Circle by Disney issue - Netgear has published yet another marketing video -App/Manage-Your-Network-amp-Get-More-Out-Of-Your-WiFi-Wit... stating:

You can re-enable Parental Controls by downloading the previous version of firmware and from routerlogin.net interface -> "Upgrading" (you will get a popup asking if you are sure you want to downgrade) to the Firmware Version 1.0.4.26 Download, see

Also, since the recent genie update, the app does not show parental controls option but the web interface does. So you might have to go to a browser vs. the app. @patsch thanks for the tip to install the 3.1.74 version

You must use the Genie desktop program on Windows or MacOS to enable OpenDNS based LPC -> How do I configure Live Parental Controls on my NETGEAR router? Once enabled, most of the specific administration is done on the Web page.

Today I found I had to re-activate and setup OpenDNS - I was not able to do this from the web interface because it directs you to Circle Disne, but setup worked in the older version of Genie. Yaay! I can now enable/disable parental controls (see image) from the routerlogin.net web interface from my phone. Note: Old versions of Genie are available from APKPure app store!

How do I file claim? I bought Dec 2018 for the sole purpose of having parental control feature. Looks like Genie desktop app is gone, nothing in the admin of the router and as of April 10 the Disney Circle app is gone. I want my money back to buy a router which does have this feature. Help!

Hi @gojambi, welcome to the community! The desktop Genie will continue to work for the Live Parental Controls feature. You can download it on the link below and go to the DOWNLOAD PC or DOWNLOAD MAC links at the bottom.

Sorry Dexter,
Lot of features previously available with the Genie Apps only are not available on the desktop Genie. And the bypass account can't be used on the mobiles now, too. This aint a solution...

By the way, did you read the earlier messages in this discussion? (You've joined in on something that started months ago from someone using different hardware.) Scroll back and you will see that there is a section of this place given over to Circle?

Since the R6400v1 isn't supported, could you have the engineers set the Genie iOS and Android apps to allow it to keep managing those routers instead of pushing us to an app that doesn't even support our hardware or our Live Parental Controls?

This link brings up a new page with the new Netgear app. Don't see anything in there for parental controls. I upgraded firmware in router to latest. No parental controls from admin page. When I use circle w/ disney app it says connect to your wifi network. I am and I get an error "couldn't find circle on your router" Do I need another piece of hardware to use in addition to the router? Do I need to buy a circle device? I"m about ready to sell the router and buy one with real parental controls. ANy help?

This is exactly what the existing Netgear router user base like many of us does not understand - end apparently even less Netgear. We need continued App support for Netgear LPC (Live Parental Control) - either by allowing the Genie App again, or including the lPC support with the Nighthawk App (instead of bloatware like the WiFi Analyzer). The re-purposed the Parental Control button on the Nighthawk App does only appear while connected to routers supporting Circle.

I've looked through this site and others and can't find the best way to manage Parental Controls on OS X 10.11 MacBook Airs. The laptops are mostly now in the hands of students, and I would love to be able to do 1 of 2 things.

2.) Alternatively, a way to allow parents to manage parental controls on laptops without having to setup an additional administrator using on laptops. I see doing that as a huge potential loophole for students to gain admin access to laptops.

You could prep the file with the defaults command or just go into iTunes's preferences and set your restrictions in there. If set with a profile these settings will not be modifiable by them, so do make sure that students/parents understand where the restriction is coming from.

We have a static group that is connected to a policy that creates a 'parent admin' account when a parent emails and asks for extra control over the parental control settings. It works pretty well for us.

This is a very interesting topic. I tackled this some time ago and have a functional solution though there are probably better ways. Our users are BYOD but fully managed (imaged) and our faculty often give tests/quizzes electronically but desire certain computer restrictions to be set in place, without needing to involve IT. We've created a Self-Service policy that will install a restricted user called "test" on student machines. This is how I accomplish that.

Now that we have the "parental_controls.plist" we can use that to restrict newly created users. I've been using "CreateUserPkg.app" to create a user installer package. This User is called "test". I can go into detail if anyone likes but the point is that you will need to create a user to restrict as part of any such policy.

This NEEDS to be exported from composer as a .pkg or you will not be able to use the 'postinstall' script. However, once youv'e done that it can simply be deployed as a standard .pkg and loaded into a policy however you like.

We also include a Self-Service policy to remove the test user when an exam/quiz is finished. Faculty members ensure that student log out of the "test" user and run a Self-Service policy that deletes the "test" user.

There's an option when creating a configuration profile to set the Parental Controls, but it doesn't work when I apply the configuration profile to a Macbook. What does this setting actually do? I tested it on Mojave.

@pbileci How are you creating the parental Control profile? I just made one to test and it went quite funky on me. Mind you, it looks like creating the profile here for this is a bit limited but would be convenient in certain circumstances.

@pbileci Were you able to solve your problem? I noticed that the parameters I sent out for Parental Controls were indeed getting there. It's just that Parental Controls was not enabled on that account. So, how does one enable Parental Controls on an account?

I want my kids friends to be able to use the guest network, but I want to block Adult Content automatically. I don't want to add each friend's device to a profile before the parental controls take effect.

No, partental controls on the Deco are profile based so a device has to be in a profile. The best solution is to make a profile on the gues network and then when a device joins the guest network add it to that profile.

That's too bad. I don't want to have to manually manage all of the devices. I really like the way the Deco M5 has been working otherwise, but parental controls are P1 requirement for me so I'm going to have to return my Decos.

Has a better solution for this been made avaiable? Manually configuring all devices is not acceptable. This leaves a MAJOR flaw that allows kids to walk right by all parental controls (both IOS and Android do random MACs by default now). Sure, I know that feature can be shut down and just HOPE the kids not smart enough to turn it back on? I am returning a competitors product today because of this problem and thought I would check to see if you guys have a better solution.
