Ihave a Canon R40 ImageFormula scanner. A few months back, it stopped working. The included software wouldn't work. Said it had a "TWAIN" error. I tried every suggestion folks put out there. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, the whole software package, etc. No luck with any of that.
So I have a useless scanner and an ever-increasing stack of documents I can't scan. It may be that a Microsoft update changed something and that started this whole issue. I wouldn't really know. I'm an end user, not a tech guy. What I do know is, the device I paid Canon hundreds of dollars for isn't working. I'd really appreciate a solution. For that matter, even some courtesy, where a Canon representative says, "yes, we know, and we're working on a fix" and a timeframe for when this will be done would be nice. Can someone please get on this?
Thanks for the suggestion. VueScan says it can't see the scanner, either. I'm pretty sure it's a Windows issue that started this, but in the end, it's Canon's issue, since they need their software to keep up with whatever crap Microsoft has now inflicted upon us. (I paid Canon for a scanner, and I want it to work.) Anyhow, thanks for that suggestion!

I appreciate that, Stephen, but the link you offered is where this all started. It offers driver downloads that don't work, and it also offered me the opportunity to come to this forum. The forum also sent me an e-mail that said, "Did it solve your problem? Click here to view the replies and mark one as an Accepted Solution. This helps others find helpful answers in the community too!"
So it sure looks like Canon is treating this as support. And I'm not expecting immediate results. I've been living with a non-working scanner for months, as well as asking here. So any chance Canon will come up with a solution soon?
I called Canon support after having this problem following an upgrade to Win 11. They instructed me to run the "Restoration Tool for Windows Registry" found on the Drivers and Downloads page under the Utilities tab. The "Readme" file included explains that it solves a Windows registry inconsistency that can keep the scanner from being recognized by Windows.
Update: It worked for a few days, then I was back to the same old problem. I called Canon Support again (they were quick to answer). They had me do the following actions, which got me going again but is a temporary fix:
1) From the Windows "Start" Icon, search for "Services" and launch it.
2) Scroll down to "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)". Right click or use the link at the left of the window to stop the service. Wait 30 seconds, then restart the service.
It worked for me, for now.
They sent me a link to a patch (picndln_install_08262020.exe) that will reportedly solve the problem in the future (time will tell). I asked them to please make this available publicly as there are a lot of people looking for a fix.
Pardon my ignorance, I'm technically challenged, but for those of us that don't know, just where "exactly" does one look to find . . . . "the "Restoration Tool for Windows Registry" found on the Drivers and Downloads page under the Utilities tab". I haven't a clue as to how to find what you indicate is a solution for this issue that Canon is blaming on someone/something else.
The printer works fine without any trouble, but Toolbox (to scan documents) isn't working. It doesn't detect the scanner. Is there an update for this printer to support windows 10 soon? Or is there another way I can go about doing this?
I have same problem with my MF4350d scanner. If anyone has figured out a way to get Toolbox or scanner to work with windows 10, please post. Printing is not a problem, but I need to use the scanner too.
It simply requires that you uninstall the current drivers, remove the printer, disconnect the printer USB cable, reboot the computer, and reinstall the drivers, connect the printer USB cable and reinstall the printer..I used Print Management app to uninstall current drivers. Both the tool box and Windows Fax and Scan program worked after these steps.
Yes, this works until I shut down the pc and rebooted it. Then Win 10 could not connect the scanner again. Repeating the steps get it to work again, but only until the next shut down. Any help on a more permanet sollution?
I had issues with keeping my scanner working and had to reset the connection regularly. Recently I saw that I had drivers for an additional older scanner (Xerox) installed on my computer. I unistalled all other drivers except for the Canon, and have been good for a while now. I recommend looking to see if you can remove any older scanner drivers or programs using"Uninstall a program".
I verified that my prefix and suffix are working correctly (barcode scanned into a text box on the tablet and the code showed the ! prefix and @ suffix) and verified the component is working in preview mode (manually typing in with the ! prefix and @ suffix generated an entry in the component data array).
I had a zebra barcode scanner running android that acted the same way. There was a delay setting that had to be adjusted. The scanner is acting as a keyboard but the default setting was faster than the Barcode Scanner Input component could keep up with. Adding a very short delay between key entries, in the scanner, was enough to get it working for me.
Hello bpreston ! We're also using a Zebra (MC33) and trying to implement a solution with Ignition using Perspective and the Barcode Scanner Input component ( +-+Barcode+Scanner+Input). However, when we try to scan and error message appears saying "Error. The device do not has a built-in camera", referring that it needs a camera in order to function and since our Zebra has a laser it's not going to scan. How can we get it to work properly?
Also, is it necessary to use the Ignition app or can we use this component when opening the project from within the handhelds web browser?
I'm not sure why you would see that error. Even the manual page you sent lists that it is designed for keyboard wedge scanners. For it to work, the scanner has to be setup to act as a keyboard. I do remember having to change some settings for it to do this. Part of that was setting the prefix and suffix characters. Where that component just monitors for the scanner to send keyboard signals.
You can test the component in the designer using your keyboard. If you run the view, you can type your prefix, then a string of numbers to simulate a barcode, and then your suffix. After you type your suffix, the component should handle the "barcode string" based on the event script your write under Component Events/onActionPreformed. Just make sure you use a script and not the "Scan Barcode" option in the event script.
As for your last thing, the MC33 is running Android, as far as I know, for it to work you will need to use the Ignition app. To me the Ignition app is prefered in that application because I was able to configure it to auto load into the Ignition app and setup the Ignition app to open the project that was built for that scanner. Having it do that I didn't have to worry about an operator changing settings on it and creating new issues for me.
It seems the issue was because of the 'Scan Barcode' option in the event configuration. For Ignition 8.1 this action specifies a camera preference, thus it expects a camera to perform the scan. I then adjusted the prefix and suffix as you mentioned and, additionally, had to set a 1 ms delay between the characters input in the Zebra handheld in order for it to read properly the input. I manage the input through the Perspective Session Events, that's the main difference from your approach, but it does seem to work fine too.
Understood, that's a great point. Thank you!
If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm communication and to make sure the correct driver is used. Click the name of your printer, then click the minus sign to delete the printer. Once the printer is removed, click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, then continue to the next step.
If your printer is not listed in the Add Printer or Scanner window, make sure the printer is connected to the Mac with a USB cable, or that it is on the same wired or wireless network as your Mac.
Thank you so much this worked even though I had the opposite problem. My printer said it was "offline", but the scanner worked just fine. After hours of tearing my hair out yesterday, I don't know why I didn't google search this problem earlier. What a relief! Thanks again!!!
My printer/scanner just started acting up today. The problem is with the scanner flatbed, when it scans, it shows a blank document. It says it scans, but shows up as just a blank piece of paper on my computer. When I scan using the document feeder, it works fine. It prints fine and everything. Somehow the scanner flatbed is not working.
@Saksham317 If you've got the same printer as the OP and have the same issue, I must ask, did you perform a hard reset and update the printer firmware using the link shared by @sandytechy20? If yes, and yet the issue persists, we may have reached the end of the line, considering this could be a hardware malfunction and I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:
Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,
I have a Motorola Moto g stylus 2022 phone. The ebay app scanner was working fine until today. Now it just does not do anything when trying to scan. Something changed in the ebay app as it was working fine the last time I used it 2 days ago. Anyone else having the same problem?
