NVivo Transcription is an automated, cloud-based transcription service integrated into NVivo. It allows you to send media files for transcription directly from NVivo, returning the transcripts embedded with the media files they were created from Audio and video.

NVivo Transcription is a paid service with annual subscription or pay-as-you-go options (see Lumivero website or Transcription online Help for more information). (If you have bought or been assigned a license to Transcription you can also transcribe files using the Transcription website.)

You are logged into Transcription with the same myLumivero account you are logged into NVivo with (shown in the dropdown in the top-right of the interface). If you are not logged into NVivo you will be prompted to log in. (If you have multiple accounts, select one with a valid Transcription subscription or credits.)

Using the latest automation technology, NVivo Transcription provides verbatim transcription with 90% accuracy from quality recordings. With natural language processing (NLP), you can transcribe audio and video in 42 languages to support research from around the world. NVivo Transcription can offer an accurate transcript in about half the length of your audio or video file.

Our rich text editor lets you quickly review the automatic transcription, tag speakers, add notes and make changes as needed. You can then import the transcript directly into NVivo or export it for external use in either .docx or .txt formats.

Built for anyone who needs to accurately transcribe large audio and video files (up to 4 hr./4 GB), NVivo Transcription helps researchers in academia, non-profit, and government save valuable time by speeding up their transcription process.

Researchers in education, commercial, government, and non-profit settings often have extensive qualitative data they need to analyze in the form of audio or video. Transforming this data into an audio transcription or video transcription file lets them quickly scan for themes with NVivo. Some of the most common uses for audio and video transcriptions are for focus group research.

Take advantage of annual access to NVivo Transcription, giving you the freedom to transcribe as much as 50 hours in a year, when you need it. A one-time payment provides you with access to up to 50 hours of transcription for a full 12 months after purchase.

Our flexible pay-as-you-go (PAYG) option is perfect if you require a limited amount of transcription. You can buy NVivo Transcription credit by the hour or save by purchasing a bulk package of 10 hours while having the flexibility to top up your credit along the way. Your transcription credit lasts for 90 days.

You can use MS Word Online to transcribe audio. This FAQ covers how to use the Transcribe button in MS Word Online to record and transcribe a live interview, but the same principle applies and you would upload your audio file instead of recording. You can then prepare the Word document for import into NVivo.

You can type in your question in the search bar above. You can also browse the digital skills and assistive technology topics above to find what you are looking for. Use the filter options in the top right-hand corner to select topics and groups of FAQs.

You can definitely export your videoask responses to a CSV file and it will transcribe any video or audio answers that you collect, so hopefully that would be compatible and help to minimise the number of steps in your flow.

I had read online that voice-to-text options are the way to go for transcribing. I did a quick google and found otter.ai which is a voice-to-text transcriber. Otter.AI is good if you want to record the conversation and have it transcribe for you. Sounds almost too good to be true right?

The only problem is that Otter.Ai works from being able to distinguish between two voices to create the transcript. So what I ended up with was a jumble of text that was a mix of both my text, and the interviewees text. Here is an example in which there are two speakers, with their text jumbled (I ask a question, then the participant responds, and I ask a follow up question):

One frustrating thing about otter is that when you click on a word to edit it, it automatically starts playing the recording from that word. I hated this, sometimes I wanted to edit a word without having to fumble around and hit pause.

By now I had also realised a fundamental flaw in Otter.AI. It requires the internet. This is fine for those who are in a country where there is stable internet and electricity, but we have had two scheduled power outages in the last month (lasting all day), and random ones in between (lasting from 1 hour-8 hours). In one of these power outages I realised, I am importing my interviews into NVivo anyway, why not have a go at using it?

If you have an audio or video file that you need to get transcribed, this page describes some automated options to consider. But keep in mind, though, that none of these options (including NVivo transcription) provides a 100% perfectly accurate transcript. You will always have to go back in and correct your transcript.

Note: If you use Zoom to conduct your interviews live instead of working with a recording, you could use approach a) or b), and it would automatically detect the speakers and label them appropriately in the transcript.

Summary: QSR offers a paid automated transcription service where you upload audio and video files to transcribe. You are able to edit the files in the online interface and download the transcripts as text or Word files when they are ready.

Researchers may transcribe interviews manually, and there are also resources that can be used to speed up the transcription process with good to about 90% accuracy. Always review, edit, and structure your transcript before importing into a QDA tool. Check documentation to see if auto transcribed files may be imported directly into the QDA program.

Automated transcription may involve having data on the internet or with a third party and should be used with caution if your audio has any personal or sensitive information. Check your organization data security and IRB policies. For more information visit our library Research Data Management guide.

Simply upload your audio file and let NVivo Transcription do the rest. With good quality audio, you can expect up to 90% accuracy and a file transcribed in a timespan of half the length of the audio. You can then make amendments and tag speakers using a specialized editor and directly import transcribed files into NVivo 12.

There are a few different options for working with audio or video files in NVivo, one of which is to simply listen to and code from the audio or video timeline rather than creating a transcript. However generally it is easiest to work with a transcript, in which case you can choose to either create the transcript yourself in NVivo, have the audio or video file transcribed with NVivo Transcription (a paid service), or have the audio or video file transcribed using other software (free or paid). This section provides some information on these options.

There are plenty of transcription services available external to NVivo, and if you use one of these you can upload the finished transcript of your audio or video file into your project (there is no problem with having the audio or video file and the transcript as two separate items in your project). One example of transcription software that provides a limited amount of free transcription is Otter.ai.

NVivo is a software package with analysis tools for qualitative researchers. It can be a good help throughout the research process, from the thesis statement, organizing data, coding, and working with other researchers in systematic analysis like organizing information.

If you need to process a rich dataset of unstructured information (like interviews, logs, images, or video), NVivo is a good tool. The software "automates" some manual tasks, like classifying or organizing information.

To take full advantage of all of NVivo's functionality (such as text search and coding of text sequences), we recommend that you transcribe your files (word by word) entirely first. We recommend the UiO tool Autotekst for transcription. You can also transcribe manually in NVivo or in Word and then import the Word-files to NVivo.

The library provides support in digital research methods and tools, including NVivo. They offer courses in NVivo each semester, and can also provide counseling in how to use NVivo. See the library's course schedule.

Questions about NVivo? Ask the NVivo team at the library if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment for guidance in your use of NVivo.

Further enhance your research by extending the power of NVivo with cloud-based modules: collaborate on projects with researchers from across the globe with Collaboration Cloud, or use NVivo Transcription to automatically transcribe files verbatim.

As research teams expand in size and geography, so does the importance of real-time collaboration with colleagues. Share data, expertise, and insights with ourcollaboration solutions. NVivo Collaboration lets you set your team up for success, no matter how your collaboration architecture looks, to deliver the best possible results.

Project data can be easily downloaded from any Collaboration Cloud project in order to conduct analysis, compile notes, and offer additional insights. Once your work for the day is done, save and upload to the workspace so your contributions can be added to the master project.

Upload a wide array of audio file formats to the online platform from your computer or mobile device. All uploaded data is encrypted and securely stored to protect participant privacy according to strict confidentiality and HIPAA standards.

Using the latest automation technology, NVivo Transcription provides verbatim transcription with 90% accuracy from quality audio. Transcribe audio in 28 languages to support research from around the world. NVivo Transcription is able to offer an accurate transcript in about half the length of your audio file.
