Meeting with the Minister of Education, Professor G.L.Peiris

Dear Friends,

 Meeting with the Minister of Education, Professor G.L.Peiris

This is to briefly inform you about the meeting recently we had with the Minister of Education, Professor G.L.Peiris and the Chairman of UGC. (on 15^th February 2021)

Before this meeting, we got a chance to have two meetings with Dr. Harini Amarasuriya (Member of the Parliament) and Mr. Anupa Pasquel (Member of the Parliament). At those meetings, we explained our problems and handed over the relevant documents to them. Both of them are members of the committee of education in parliament and that is the reason for us to consider these meetings will be effective. And also we think that we will be able to follow up on the progress of the procedures through them.

As a result of those meetings, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya arranged a meeting with the Minister. Actually, without the support of her, we surely would not be able to have this opportunity of having this meeting. And also both Mr. Anupa Pasquel and Dr. Harini Amarasuriya participated in this event and we really understood that their participation was highly strengthened the meeting.

In this regards, we must be very much thankful to Mr. Mahinda Chandrasiri (University of Peradeniya) for contacting Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and to Mr. Palitha Kodagoda (University of Colombo- PGIM) for contacting Mr. Anupa Pasquel  and also to get their participation for this meeting.

Our Suggestions:

1.       Create a separate category for us in the University System (without being considered just as another staff in the category of Academic Support Staff)

We, again and again, expressed to them, this is the main barrier that we have to face all the time when demanding our rights.

2.       Establish a promotion scheme for us.

We explained to them, for about 16 years we have been requesting for a promotion scheme by producing proposals and also we gave them final proposal of promotion scheme which we had created in 2017.

(As we understood that the current Chairman of UGC doesn’t have any kind of awareness of that proposal)

Their Solutions :

The Minister asked UGC to involve these matters and quickly response for the problems which could easily be considered,

And also he asked to produce an interim update for us about the progress of the relevant processes.

UGC agreed to update us before next 15^th.  (15^th March 2021-within one month from the meeting)

 

We are expecting your support to contact members of education committee in parliament, then we can take their support. They can question UGC continuously.
