Readers of Luxe Libris know that I welcome recommendations for feature subjects. This month’s comes from friend of the newsletter Abbie Weil who recommended editor Elda Granata, her former colleague at Oxford University Press (they’ve both since moved on) for her gorgeous Italian style. I needed no further convincing; I loved the idea of talking to an editor about both her work and her style. I’m smitten with women like Diana Athill, Blanche Knopf, and Avis Devoto—the self-possessed editrixes with heaps of panache who discovered, coaxed, and catapulted some of the twentieth-century’s greatest writers into canon. Elda, I was not at all surprised to learn, comes from this tradition of discerning taste and quiet glamor. Here’s our chat.

It was a lot of fun to work on this project! And the authors were such lovely and interesting people. Working with, and getting to know, brilliant scholars and writers is one of my favorite aspects of being an editor. People often think our job is simply to “edit” books, namely read them and correct the language and style, but in fact that’s the job of the copyeditor or proofreader. The work of an acquisitions (or commissioning) editor is something much more big-picture than that. In short, we come up with an idea for a project, we find an author to work on it, and then guide its intellectual and editorial development until publication, and beyond. Ultimately, by deciding what projects to publish and what perspectives to highlight, we have a unique opportunity to shape the direction of a field.

These three styles are ideal for snow-covered landscapes or polar landscapes dominated by ice, rocks and glaciers. The special focus is on the cool tones of blue and aquamarine. The styles work best for scenes with cloudy or overcast skies, as this is where the blue hue of the ice comes out best.

A picture of water in a very rare North Carolina mined aquamarine in a modified trillion cut is clasped by heavy talon prongs. Textured vines climb the sides of the ring in an organic cathedral shape. This ring is a song of protection, harmony and an ode to all that is naturally beautiful and serene.

AQUINO, a town and episcopal see of Campania, Italy, in theprovince of Caserta; it is 56 m. N.W. by rail from the townof Caserta, and 7 m. N.W. of Cassino. Pop. (1901) 2672. Themodern town, close to the ancient, is unimportant, though thecanons of the cathedral have the privilege of wearing the mitreand cappa magna at great festivals. It is close to the site of theancient Aquinum, a municipium in the time of Cicero, and madea colony by the Triumviri, the birthplace of Juvenal and of theemperor Pescennius Niger. The Via Latina traversed it; oneof the gates through which it passed, now called Porta S. Lorenzo,is still well preserved, and there are remains within the walls(portions of which, built of large blocks of limestone, still remain)of two (so called) temples, a basilica and an amphitheatre (seeR. Delbrück in Röm. Mitteilungen, 1903, p. 143). Outside, on thesouth is a well-preserved triumphal arch with composite capitals, and close to it the 11th-century basilica of S. Maria Libera, ahandsome building in the Romanesque style, but now roofless.Several Roman inscriptions are built into it, and many othersthat have been found indicate the ancient importance of the place, which, though it does not appear in early history, is vouched forby Cicero and Strabo.1 A colony was planted here by the Triumviri.St Thomas Aquinas was born in the castle of Roccasecca, 5 m. N.
