The Story of Ashtavakra: A Journey of Self-Realisation:
Ashtavakra, born with eight deformities, was a prodigy who mastered the Vedas while still in his mother's womb. His mother's devotion to learning and her exposure to the Vedas during pregnancy enabled him to acquire profound knowledge even a child prodigy.
The Challenge:
King Janaka announced a challenge to all scholars: defeat Vandi, the son of Varuni, in a debate and win a prize. Ekapada, Ashtavakra's father, took up the challenge but lost. As a result, he was sent to Vandi's custody along with other defeated scholars.
Ashtavakra's Quest:
Ashtavakra learned about his father's fate and decided to challenge Vandi. Despite his young age, Ashtavakra's wisdom and knowledge impressed King Janaka, who allowed him to debate Vandi.
The Debate:
Ashtavakra's arguments were so compelling that Vandi was defeated. As a reward, Vandi freed all the scholars, including Ashtavakra's father.
The Ashtavakra Gita:
Later, King Janaka sought Ashtavakra's guidance on spiritual knowledge. Ashtavakra imparted his wisdom, which became known as the Ashtavakra Gita. This sacred text explores the nature of reality, the self, and the path to enlightenment.
